1— 313 engraved, in double format and mounted on guards. These are: 1° The great hermetic androgyne *; 2° the Laboratory of Khunrath*; 3° the Adam-Eve in the verbal triangle; 4° the Rose-Croix1 pentagrammatic* (which we shall discuss in detail); 3° the Seven degrees of the sanctuary and the seven rays; 6° the alchemical Citadel with twenty doors without exit*; 7° the Gymnasium naturæ, a synthetic and very learned figure under the aspect of a rather naive landscape; 8 0 the Emerald Table engraved on the igneous and mercurial stone; 9° finally, the Pantacle of Khunrath*, garlanded with a satirical caricature, in the style of Callot; it is even a Callot avant la lettre. (See what Eliphas Levi says of it, Histoire de la magie, p. 368.) This last plate, of a bloody irony and a truly savory savage art, is missing from nearly all the copies. The numerous enemies of the theosopher, who see themselves caricatured there with a harsh genius, and whom one easily guesses to have been triumphantly concerned with the resemblances, strove to make disappear an engraving of so scandalous an interest. As for the other pantacles, those whose description we have followed with an asterisk are likewise lacking in a number of copies.
2Let us occupy ourselves now with the text divided into two sections. The first sixty pages, numbered separately, comprise an imperial privilege (dated 1398), then various pieces: discourse, dedication, poems, prologue, arguments. Finally the text of the proverbs of Solomon, of which the rest of l'Amphitheatrum is the esoteric commentary. Then comes this commentary, constituting the work properly speaking, in seven chapters, themselves followed by very curious clarifications under this title: Interpretationes et Annotationes Henrici Khunrath. Total of this second part: 222 pages. A last leaf bears the name of the printer: G. Antonius, and the date: Hanoviæ, M DC. IX. We shall end this description with an important note from the learned bibliophile G.-F. de Bure, who says, in volume II of his Biblio- 1. This figure, as well as the one marked in these notes under number 1 (l'Androgyne hermétique) will be reproduced in copper-plate with a detailed commentary, at the head of a new, revised and considerably augmented edition that we are about to publish at Carré's of our work published in 1886: Essais de sciences maudites: I. Au seuil du mystère. 33 — 514 —
3graphie: « It should be noted that in the first part of this work, which is of sixty pages, one must find, between pages 18 and 19, a kind of particular table printed on an entire leaf with guards, and which is entitled: Summa Amphitheatri sapienti.se, etc..., and in the second part, of two hundred twenty-two pages, one must find another table, likewise printed on an entire leaf, with guards, and which must be placed at page 151, where it is recalled by two stars that have been placed in the printed discourse. — We have noted that these two tables were missing in the copies we have seen; that is why it will be good to take care of it... » (page 248). Let us now pass to the study of the kabbalistic plate that l'Initiation has offered to its subscribers. ANALYSIS OF THE ROSE-CROIX according to Henry Khunrath This figure is a marvelous pantacle, that is to say the hieroglyphic summary of an entire doctrine: one finds there synthesized, as the review has previously announced, all the pentagrammatic mysteries of the Rose-Croix of the adepts. + * It is first the central point unfolding the circumference in three different degrees, which gives us the three circular and concentric regions figuring the process of the Emanation properly speaking. ★ * * At the center, a Christ on the cross within a rose of light: this is the resplendence of the Word or of the Adam Kadmon tTïtf; this is the emblem of the Great Arcanum: never has the identity of essence between Man-Synthesis and manifested God been more audaciously revealed. It is not without the most profound reasons that the hierograph reserved for the middle of his pantacle the symbol figuring the incarnation of the eternal Word. It is indeed through the Word,
