La longueur de la ligne d’Apollon indique la faculté d’inventer ou d’idéaliser: Quand cette ligne est accompagnée d’une foule d’autres petites lignes sous le doigt d’Apollon, l’individu a des tendances artistiques très développées (A). Les musiciens ont d’habitude une foule de petites lignes peu — 837 — marquées, les poètes ou les peintres ont moins de lignes, mais plus profondes. Une fourche en haut de cette ligne indique la fortune (B). DE LA SCIENCE. La ligne de Mercure accompagnée de petites lignes sous le petit doigt indique le goût de la Science (et non spécialement de la Médecine, comme dit Desbarolles). On verra le genre de Science par l’existence ou la non-existence de la ligne d’intuition se continuant dans la main. De même que le Pouce devenu pernicieux indiquait l’assassinat, le petit doigt spatulé, c’est-à-dire matérialisé et finissant en massue \ — 838 — (voir les travaux de d'Arpentigny) indique la tendance au Vol, péché mignon du dieu Mercure qui reçoit en même temps les hommages des commerçants et des voleurs. DU COMMERCE. Une seule ligne profonde sous Mercure indique le goût du commerce. GOUT DE LA GLOIRE OU DE L’ARGENT. L’idéal du théoricien c’est la Gloire. L’idéal de l’homme pratique c’est l’Argent. Pour voir de suite quel est celui de ces goûts qui domine chez un — 839 —
2individu, on regarde quel est celui des doigts, index ou annulaire, qui dépasse l’autre. Cette comparaison est très facile, grâce à Saturne. Si l’annulaire (Apollon) dépasse, c’est que l’amour de la gloire l’emporte sur l’amour de l’argent, et qu’on préfère en général l’idéal à la vie pratique. Le contraire a lieu si Jupiter dépasse Apollon. Amour de la gloire (intuitif). Amour de l’argent (déductif). CONCLUSION On pourrait continuer ces déductions et entrer dans une foule de détails venus de la tradition. Notre intention n’est pas de résumer les traités connus sur la question. Nous avons voulu montrer comment les données fondamentales de la Science occulte s’appliquaient exactement à tout, même à la chiromancie. La plupart des données que nous établissons ci-dessus sont originales. Elles seront un guide précieux pour ceux qui voudront _ approfondir ce genre d’études. Je leur conseille vivement de se procurer l’ouvrage d’un élève d’Eliphas Levi, Desbar olles l, qui a beaucoup étudié cet art, mais en se perdant trop dans les détails. 1. 3§ 1. — L’IDÉE. — LA VIE ET LA MATIÈRE LE MAGNÉTISME ET LE SPIRITISME L’idée directrice clans le monde invisible, la matière manifestant cette idée par la forme dans le monde visible, un courant fluidique intermédiaire, tels sont les éléments d’action que nous avons déterminés chez l’homme. Dans une étude précédente1, nous avons vu qu’on pouvait comparer l’idée au cocher d’une voiture, le corps à la voiture elle-même et le principe intermédiaire au cheval. Le Corps astral (nom dans la Science occulte de ce principe intermédiaire) fabrique le corps physique à l’insu de la volonté, nous l’avons vu dans le chapitre XVIII. C’est dire que ce principe intermédiaire est plus fort physiquement que les deux autres principes. The length of the line of Apollo indicates the faculty of invention or of idealizing: When this line is accompanied by a host of other small lines beneath the finger of Apollo, the individual has very developed artistic tendencies (A). Musicians usually have a host of small, faint lines, — 837 — Painters or poets have fewer lines, but deeper ones. A fork at the top of this line indicates fortune (B). OF SCIENCE. The line of Mercury accompanied by small lines beneath the little finger indicates a taste for Science (and not specially for Medicine, as Desbarolles says). One will see the kind of Science by the presence or absence of the line of intuition continuing into the hand. Just as the Thumb turned pernicious indicated murder, the little finger spatulate, that is to say materialized and ending in a club, — 838 — (see the works of d'Arpentigny) indicates a tendency to Theft, the besetting sin of the god Mercury, who receives at once the homage of merchants and of thieves. OF COMMERCE. A single deep line beneath Mercury indicates a taste for commerce. TASTE FOR GLORY OR FOR MONEY. The ideal of the theorist is Glory. The ideal of the practical man is Money. 2individual, one looks at which of the fingers, index or ring finger, exceeds the other. This comparison is very easy, thanks to Saturn. If the ring finger (Apollo) exceeds, it means that the love of glory prevails over the love of money, and that one prefers, in general, the ideal to practical life. The opposite occurs if Jupiter exceeds Apollo. Love of glory (intuitive). Love of money (deductive). CONCLUSION One could continue these deductions and go into a host of details drawn from tradition. Our intention is not to summarize the treatises already known on the subject. We have wished to show how the fundamental data of Occult Science apply exactly to everything, even to chiromancy. Most of the data we have established above are original. They will be a precious guide for those who wish to go deeper into this kind of study. 3§ 1. — THE IDEA. — LIFE AND MATTER MAGNETISM AND SPIRITISM The directing idea in the invisible world, matter manifesting this idea by form in the visible world, an intermediate fluidic current — such are the elements of action that we have identified in man. In a previous study1, we saw that one could compare the idea to the coachman of a carriage, the body to the carriage itself, and the intermediate principle to the horse. The Astral Body (the name in Occult Science for this intermediate principle) fabricates the physical body without the knowledge of the will; we saw this in Chapter XVIII. This is to say that this intermediate principle is physically stronger than the two other principles.
