1As we cannot insist too much on the meaning to be given to proper names, we shall cite an extract from a contemporary author, a disciple of Fabre d'Olivet, as he himself proclaims in 'La France vraie' — this is Saint-Yves d'Alveydre. * * * 'To deliver the lawgiver of the Hebrews from the theological calumnies of which he has been the object regarding the Father of Mankind, I ask the reader to lift with me the triple veil of which I have spoken. 'Likeness of IEVE, masculine and feminine as He is, Adam has a meaning far vaster still than what the naturalists formulate despite themselves, when, wishing to express the cosmogonic Power that specifies man, as a physical individual, they call this power the Hominal Kingdom. 'Adam is the hierogram of this universal principle; he represents the intelligent soul of the Universe itself, Universal Word animating the totality of the solar systems, not only in the visible Order, but also and above all in the invisible Order. 'For when Moses speaks of the animating principle of our Solar System, it is no longer Adam that he mentions, but Noah. 'Shadow of IEVE, living thought and organic Law of the Elohim, Adam is the celestial Essence from which emanate all Humanities past, present, future, not only here below, but across the immensity of the heavens. It is the universal Soul of Life, Nephesh Haiah, of that homogeneous substance which Moses calls Adamah, that which Plato names the higher Earth. 'Now here I am not interpreting at all, I am expressing literally the cosmogonic thought of Moses; for such is the Adam of the sanctuaries of Thebes and of the Baereschit, the great celestial Man of all the ancient temples, from Gaul down to the depths of the Indies.' 'The famous serpent of the supposed garden of delights signifies nothing other, in the Egyptian text of Moses, than what Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire has just expressed (self-attraction toward self): Nahash, the primal Attraction whose hieroglyph was a serpent drawn in a certain manner. 'The word Haroum, which the Hebrew lawgiver has follow the preceding hierogram, is the famous Hariman of the first
21. Saint-Yves d'Alveydre, p. 135. Adam. Zoroaster and expresses the universal drawing-along of natured Nature, caused by the preceding principle.' 'As for the supposed Eden, here is what it signifies in the hermetic text of Moses, priest of Osiris: 'Gan-Bi-Héden, dwelling of Adam-Eve, represents the Organism of the universal Sphere of Time, the Organization of the Totality of that which is temporal. 'The famous rivers, which number four in one, that is to say which form an organic quaternary, express no more the Tigris and the Euphrates, than the Tiber, the Seine or the Thames, for, once again, the first ten chapters of Moses are a Cosmogony and not a geography. 'Thus these supposed rivers are in reality universal fluids which, issuing from Gan, the organic Power par excellence, flood the temporal Sphere, Heden, the boundless Time of Zoroaster, placed itself between two Eternities, one anterior, Kaedem, the other posterior, Ghôlim.' To clearly show how the Sepher can be interpreted in three senses, we give the important study made on this question, likewise by Saint-Yves d'Alveydre. This study will show that this author is indeed an original writer and will contribute not a little to clearing him of the charge of plagiarism brought against him by a few envious of his works.
3THE THREE MEANINGS OF THE SEPHER OF MOSES After having read them (the books of Moses) one might perhaps say: how is it possible that three orders of truths and realities expressed by a single hierogram do not become confused with one another? I shall meet this legitimate concern head-on, by recalling that the fifty chapters of Moses, the first twenty especially, turn upon Principles. Not only does this manner of writing not confound them in their own mode; but it is the only one that can render them intelligible. A Principle is a simple thing in itself. One does not decompose it by analysis; one proves it by synthesizing what is identical to it. But man in the flesh can conceive nothing simple, without the I. Saint-Yves d'Alveydre, Mission des Juifs, Ouroboros. decomposing it virtually, as the prism of our atmosphere decomposes the white ray, the sonic unity, etc., etc. This is because the individual is triple within us, and the Ternary is the only relative Unity that can be comprehended or refracted therein. Intellectual, moral, instinctive, man will see through thought a Principle only through his own constitution, brought back, by dint of virtue and science, to its greatest simplicity, to its greatest Unity — relative simplicity, harmonic Unity once again. According to the method of the divine or Dorian sciences, Moses proceeds from high to low, from the grave to the acute, from the universal to the particular, from the intelligible to the sensible, from the occult to the manifest. But, in all their modes, the evolution of Principles is mathematically the same, from Cycle to Cycle, whether the Cycle be the entire Universe or a single Solar System, the hominal Kingdom of this Planet or the necessary constitutions of the planet itself.
