1de déterminer dans l’élude de notre phalange. — Voyons l’origine.

1determined in the study of our phalanx. — Let us now see their origin. — We shall here enumerate our conclusions without development, on pain of turning this short study into a veritable volume. The elements necessary for the repair of the material losses of the organism are manufactured in the Belly. It may be said, in two words: The Belly manufactures the body. The life necessary for the repair of the vital losses of the organism is manufactured in the Chest (the function of respiration). In two words: The Chest manufactures the life. The will necessary for the conscious movement of the organism draws its origin from the Head. The Head manufactures the will. Bone BODY Nerves WILL lrc phalanx of the index finger (diagram). The three centers of man (diagram). Schematic figure of the physiological constitution of man Here, then, are three centers, the Belly, the Chest, and the Head, corresponding exactly to our three elements: the Body, 18G Life, the Will. The way these centers act must, then, always be analogous. Let us see whether this deduction is true.
2If one grasps well the interplay of these principles, one will see that Life is the necessary intermediary; without it, the body cannot obey the promptings of the soul, the soul cannot receive the impressions of the body. Here is a theory very neatly arrived at, certain philosophers will not fail to say. Unable to reconcile these two opposites, the body and the soul, unable to explain how the subjective becomes objective, you dodge the question, gentlemen occultists, by inventing a so-called intermediate principle, conveniently endowed with all the properties necessary to your cause1. It suffices to open any treatise on physiology whatever to learn that this principle, which makes our heart and our liver beat despite our will and beyond its influence, does indeed exist, whatever its origin may otherwise be. The great error of the occultists has, up to now, been to wish to remain confined within their own domain, without concerning themselves with the discoveries of experimental science. Tell a doctor: the astral body makes the splanchnic organs work, and the doctor will look at you as a gentle lunatic; tell him, on the contrary: organic life moves these organs, and he will answer you at once: of course! I know that very well. Show him, next, that what he calls organic life, you call the astral body, and one can already begin to understand one another. When you wish to be understood by a foreigner, you 1. Voy. Blet, philosophique de Franck, articles Paracelse et R. Fludd.
3— 187 — know very well that it is useless to speak your own language to him, however loudly you may shout. This elementary rule seems obvious. And yet how often is it unknown on both sides! To make the interplay of these three principles well understood, I shall once more indulge the fancy so dear to me, by making use of an analogy of very humble origin. If you wish to understand well the constitution of man: stand at your window, and watch some carriage or other pass by in the street; you will see more clearly there than in reading all the treatises crammed with Sanskrit or Hebrew words. A moving carriage comprises three principal elements: 1° The carriage; 2° A horse harnessed to this carriage and setting it in motion; 3° A coachman guiding the horse. The carriage. Analogical image of the three principles of man. The carriage is inert in itself. It is incapable of moving without another element; here, indeed, is the fundamental character of the material body. 188 —
