1CHAPITRE II La Distinction . v. 1.

1CHAPTER II The Distinction. v. 1. Thus, having to be accomplished in act, the gods and the Earth were accomplished in potency, and the regulating Law that was to preside over their developments. 2. And the Being of beings having finished, at the seventh phenomenal manifestation, the sovereign act He had conceived, returned to His primitive state in this seventh period, after the entire accomplishment of the divine work He had effected. 3. That is why He blessed, HIM-the-Gods, this seventh phenomenal manifestation, and sanctified forever its symbolic existence as being the epoch of His return to His primitive state, after the entire accomplishment of the sovereign act whose design He had created according to His efficient power. 4. Such is the type of the generations of the Heavens and of the Earth, following the manner of their creation, on the day when Ihôah, HIM-the-Gods, de- 456 —
2deploying His creative power, made in principle the Heavens and the Earth. 5. And the entire conception of Nature, before Nature existed upon the Earth, and its vegetative force, before it had vegetated: for Ihôah, the Being of beings, made it not rain upon the Earth, and universal Adam did not yet exist in actual substance, to elaborate and serve the adamic Element. G. But a virtual emanation, rising with energy from the bosom of the Earth, watered the whole extent of this same element. 7. Now, Ihôah, the Being of beings, having formed the substance of Adam, from the sublimation of the subtlest parts of the adamic Element, breathed into his understanding an essence exhaled from the Lives, and from then on Adam, the universal Man, became a likeness of the living, universal Soul. 8. Then He traced, Ihôah, HIM-the-Gods, an organic enclosure in the sphere of temporal sensibility, extracted from the universal anteriority of the ages; and He placed there this same Adam, whom He had formed for eternity. 9. Ordaining the adamic Element to make every species of vegetative substance grow, as pleasant to sight, according to its nature, as good to taste; and wishing at the same time that the substantial principle of the Lives should develop at the center of the organic enclosure with the proper substance of good or of evil. 10. Meanwhile a luminous emanation, like a vast river, flowed from the sensible sphere for the vivification of the organic enclosure; divided itself there, and appeared outwardly according to the quaternary multiplying power, into four principles. 11. The name of the first of these emanated principles was Phishon, that is to say, physical reality, apparent being: it encompassed the whole land of Huivila, virtual energy, birthplace of gold. 12. And the gold of that land, emblem of luminous reflection, was good. It was also the birthplace of Bedolla, mysterious division, and of the stone Shoham, universal sublimation. 13. The name of the second of these emanated principles was Gihon, formative movement: it encompassed the whole land of Choush, the innate principle. 14. The name of the third of these emanated principles was Hiddekel, the rapid propagator, serving as vehicle for the principle of felicity. The fourth, finally, received the name Phrath, because of the fecundity of which it was the source. 15. Thus, Ihôah, the Being of beings, having taken Adam, the universal Man, placed him in the organic enclosure of temporal sensibility, that he might elaborate it and keep it with care.
316. And He strongly recommended to him, Ihôah, HIM-the-Gods, thus declaring His will to him: 'Of all the vegetative substance of the organic enclosure, you may feed yourself without fear: 17. 'But of the proper substance of the knowledge of good and evil, take care to make no consumption of it: for on the very day you feed on it, you shall become mutable, and you shall die.' 18. Then He said, Ihôah, the Being of beings: it is not good that Adam should be in solitude by himself: I shall make him a companion, an elementary helper, emanated from himself, and formed in the reflection of his light. 19. Now, He had formed outside the adamic Element, all the animality of the terrestrial nature, and every volatile species of the heavens; He brought them to Adam to see what name relative to himself this universal Man would assign to each species; and all the names he assigned to these species, in their relations with him, were the expression of their relations with the universal living Soul. 20. Thus, Adam assigned names to the whole species of the quadrupeds, to that of the birds, and generally to all the animality of nature; but he was far from finding therein this companion, this elementary helper, who, emanated from himself, and formed in the reflection of his light, was to present him with his reflected image. 21. Then Ihôah, the Being of beings, let a deep and sympathetic sleep fall upon this universal Man, who suddenly fell asleep; and breaking the unity of his outer envelopes, He took one of them, and clothed with form and corporeal beauty, his original weakness. 22. Then He restored this envelope which He had extracted from the very substance of Adam, to make it serve as the base for that of Aisha, his intellectual companion; and He brought her to him. • 23. And Adam, declaring his thought, said: this one is truly substance of my substance, and form of my form; and he called her Aisha, efficient volitive faculty, because of the intellectual volitive principle Aish, from which she had been drawn in substance. 24. That is why intellectual man, Aish, must leave his father and his mother, and unite himself to his intellectual companion, Aisha, his volitive faculty; so as to make with her but a single being under a single form. 25. Now, they were both entirely uncovered, without any corporeal veil to disguise their mental conceptions, universal Adam, and his volitive faculty Aisha; and they caused each other no shame.
