1When a somnambulistic subject wishes to establish some communication between himself and a distant person, the subject asks for something that has belonged to the person for whom he is being consulted. This object serves as a hook, a point of support, for the subject, to guide his researches. Without this object, the connections are almost impossible to establish. Here, in passing, is the reason why it is almost always impossible for a "clairvoyant" subject to tell the next day's stock prices, or the name of the winner of a race. These things can happen, but they are then an exception, brought about by certain points of connection generally absent. Starting from this quite simple datum, one understands why all serious occultists admit that one can perfectly well communicate with the soul of a being one has known, and especially one has loved. As we saw at the beginning of this chapter, the soul, after death, seeks a loving heart in which to take refuge. There is thus nothing impossible in communication, in this case. When the somnambulistic subject has no point of support upon which to exercise his activity, he takes points of support within the consultant's brain, and recites his thoughts to him. Does the consultant imagine himself called to a brilliant future? The subject, despite himself, undergoes his influence, and tells the questioner that such-and-such a magnificent affair will come about, and that riches will come to him suddenly from this quarter. The consultant leaves delighted, exclaiming: « What a marvel! The subject told me things that I alone knew!! » This is precisely the danger to be avoided. — 341
2So, when you enter a spiritist milieu, and are present at a communication from Saint John, the author of the Apocalypse, or from the Virgin Mary, look, within the audience, not for the invisible spirit, but rather for the brain from which this communication comes. This inquiry, easy to make, will instruct you in one of the most frequent causes of the phenomenon, and you will see why, in certain circles, communications could be had from the mother of Homer (!) or from d'Artagnan (!!), the hero of a novel by Alexandre Dumas. If we do not hesitate to unveil the errors committed by certain dangerous fanatics, of the kind of M. Henry Lacroix1, it is because these errors harm a cause we believe to be just and good, and which we are grieved to see exploited in this manner. Conscientious workers ought not to suffer the consequences of certain excessive theories, which at once inspire a justified mistrust in all reasonable people. Another point that shows this exaggeration is that of reincarnation. According to Occult Science, the soul cannot reincarnate itself except a very long time after the previous life. The figures ordinarily given, 1500 years, are drawn from astronomical calculations by Hindu esotericism. Certain very limited exceptions to this rule exist, among which we shall cite: Death before youth; Suicide or violent death; The conscious reincarnation of an adept, etc. Nevertheless, one may dispute the exact number of years 1. Henry Lacroix, Mes expériences avec les Esprits. Librairie spirite (1889). The reading of this book suffices to drive away forever from spiritism every sensible man. 342
3elapsing between each incarnation and, personally, our own experiences do not allow us to affirm scientifically any particular number. But this number must, in any case, be very high. Now, certain spiritists, exaggerating this doctrine, put themselves forward as the reincarnation of every great man of any renown. A worthy clerk is Voltaire reincarnated... minus the wit. A retired captain is Napoleon returned from Saint Helena, though having since lost the art of getting on in the world. And, finally, there is not a group in which Marie de Médicis, Mme de Maintenon, Mary Stuart have not returned in the bodies of good, often well-to-do, bourgeois ladies, and in which Turenne, Condé, Richelieu, Mazarin, Molière, Jean-Jacques Rousseau do not preside over some little séance or other. There lies the danger, there lies the real cause of the stagnant state of spiritism for the last fifty years; one need not seek any other reason than this, added to the ignorance and the sectarianism of the group leaders. As early as 1 853, Eliphas Levi had already given certain practices for the evocation of the dead, and had even carried out an experiment showing how, by applying the data of magic, and by identifying oneself, through prolonged study, with the work of a great man, one could call upon him, or rather upon his astral image. This brings me to explain what is meant, in occultism, by an astral image. It is curious to know what principles manifest themselves in a séance of necromancy, when the departed one answers the evocation himself. According to the doctrine of the three constituent principles of the human being, here is what takes place: The attraction exerted by the evocator acts upon the body
