When its will is strong enough to overcome this current of lunar attraction, it will be able to plunge into the astral light and pass into the current of solar attraction, into the cone of light, whence it will evolve within space. Details on this subject will be found within the Zanoni of Bulwer Lytton. It is through the Moon and its cone of light that there come to the Earth the currents of involution, of the descent of spirits into matter. It is through the Sun that there escape the currents of evolution of our universe onto another. From these considerations there follows an important fact: that, each time one is willing to take the trouble, one will see that the theological teachings do not M James Tissot, the author of this magnificent engraving, graciously the right of reproduction, but for this work. To this question, 40.000 members of every school, gathered by their delegates in Congress in September 1889, have answered in the affirmative. The ancient poets, the sacred books, show us the possibility of evoking the shades. But great precautions must be taken to avoid mistaking the reflection of one's own personal ideas for a manifestation of the departed soul. Occultism teaches that, generally speaking, the being who wishes to enter into communication with a departed one must put himself into the same psychic state as the one he evokes, that is, must give within himself preponderance to the astral world over the physical world. An initiate enters into the astral consciously through self-hypnosis; a profane makes use of an unconscious intermediary, a being magnetically put to sleep: a subject or medium.
3— 324 — Every being magnetically put to sleep enters into relation with the astral body of the consultant, and, consequently, with the brain of that consultant. And so the first of the dangers to avoid is that of mistaking, for a communication from the departed, the reflection of your own ideas within that psychic mirror that is a medium. Science must be true, and not sentimental, and so it takes no heed of the argument that holds that communication with the dead cannot be discussed, because it constitutes a « very consoling » idea. In the middle of the xix° century, a rudimentary philosophy was formed under the influence of the remarkable work of a former schoolteacher: Allan Kardec. The new doctrine took the name of spiritism. In antiquity, all the practices of occultism were enclosed within the study of Magic. This science comprised several divisions, corresponding to various orders of study, of which only two are known in our day: the action of human life upon man and upon Nature (present-day magnetism), and the evocation of the dead (present-day spiritism). To wish to teach that magnetism or spiritism contain the whole of Occult Science, as certain fanatics pretend to do, is as ridiculous as wishing to claim that Chemistry alone constitutes the whole of Science. The study of Occult Science furnishes, on the evocation of the dead, data completely unknown to most present-day spiritists, in addition to those they are beginning to know. As our assertions might give rise to some polemics within the spiritist press, we shall insist upon this point. We are attempting, in this book, to sum up as best we can — 325 —
