1— 388 — Guided by the ancient ideas, comparative philology will be a powerful auxiliary for rediscovering the sacred language, without which one can understand nothing of the symbols. I shall give shortly an example of the comparison of languages, regarding the sources of the sacerdotal language; and one will see there a glimpse of the advantages of comparative philology. I shall also make use of it in my researches on the Cross and Serapis, and on the monuments of Mithras. One at once understands the importance that the demonstration of the existence of this sacred language can have, this language of the mysteries of which all the traditions speak and which is denied by our contemporary scholars. To this question we can answer no better than by the unanimity of all the authors of antiquity cited in the following table, which we give in extenso given its importance.
