1These secret societies, created as needed, are split into distinct bands, seemingly opposed, respectively professing, by turns, the most contrary opinions of the day, in order to separately direct, and with confidence, every party — political, religious, economic and literary — and they are attached, so as to receive a common direction, to an unknown center where the powerful mainspring is hidden that thus seeks to move invisibly all the scepters of the earth. For example, the two political parties, the liberals, human right, and the royalists, divine right, who today divide the world, respectively have their secret societies from which they receive their impulse and their direction; and, without being able to suspect it, these secret societies, the one as much as the other, are themselves, through the skill of a few leaders, moved and directed according to the views of a supreme and unknown committee that governs the world. b2 Curious citation on living Providence. Condition of possibility of mystical works. This condition of possibility consists in an elevated order of life, which we have already mentioned above, announcing that we would designate it by the name of vital stasis. Everything therefore comes down to knowing to what degree human nature, that is to say the nature of the rational being on earth, on our globe, is capable of raising its vital stasis, so as to rise to the regions of mystical works. And this decisive question can be resolved only a posteriori, or by the fact itself. From this there follow, for philosophy, two major consequences. The first is that, through the presentiment man has of this mysterious vocation of his nature — a vocation that has at last been legitimized by reason — he cannot absolutely refuse all faith in mystical works; and that, as a result of this human disposition, countless charlatans and impostors, abusing so ineffaceable a credulity, have ceaselessly deceived men with pretended mystical works. The second philosophical consequence is that no work of mysticism, however slight its value — for example a simple fact of eleutheric magnetism — should be admitted as such except with the most severe criticism, and that, in order to avoid grave inconveniences, it is more profitable to human reason to fail to recognize genuine mystical works, should any exist on our globe, than to give itself over to too great a credulity with regard to them. Liberalism, or the rights of man. Freemasonry. Servilism, or the duties of man. Mystics.

3Another CURIOUS note written around 1823. b6 Directing Circles, or Illuminati properly so called. One realizes that on this point very little transpires publicly. Perhaps one could place here, at least in part, the initiated Brothers of Asia, but it is more probable that they still belong to the Strict Observance, considering above all their inclination toward mysticism, which renders them ill-suited to this higher direction. b1 Final or systematic identity between the trials and the secrets, or between the visible world and the invisible world; mystical realization of the absolute within the absolute; potential affiliation: the invisibles, or earthly spirits. — Note. — Only once did these Invisibles show themselves to men. This was at the time of the dreadful secret tribunal (Heimlicher Act). These earthly spirits do not appear today, but it is they who govern all the secret societies; and in this committee, the ancient book of blood remains ever open. The relations of the invisible to the visible had been extended to their furthest limits, so much so that one knew the chain by which any object whatever traced back to the intelligence to which it owed its form. Hence the use of certain objects, of certain characters, to fix the will in magical operations. These objects served only to form a point of support upon which the adept's will leaned in order to act like a powerful magnet upon the universal force. An adept cannot produce an effect against nature, a miracle, for the good reason that this does not exist. 931
