2. History of Freemasonry, par Jacques-Georges Gould.

1§ 4. — LOSS OF THE TRADITION We have said that Masonry had totally lost the sense of the esoteric tradition. No mason, or almost none, understands today the importance of the symbolism of the Lodges. This comes from the fact that Masonry threw itself entirely into politics instead of remaining independent. What are the causes of this error in its direction? A few words of history will show us. Here first is the present state of the various Masonic rites, with the date of their foundations: See the Secret Instructions of the Sovereign Grand Inspectors General for the conduct of Lodges, Chapters and Councils, written by the vicomte de la Jonquière — the manuscript bearing the number 43 in the collection of the « La Jonquière Manuscripts » of the Grand Lodge of Edinburgh. See also the Monita of the Sovereign Grand Inspectors General, Supreme Council for the northern Jurisdiction of the United States, Boston, published 1880. 1. 2FOUNDING OF THE VARIOUS RITES But Freemasonry did not long preserve the external unity that its founders, chiefly Anderson and Desaguliers, had dreamed of for it. As early as 1728 the Rites made their appearance; and these varied incarnations of pure gnosticism became more and more numerous, as success seemed to attach itself to the variety of the external forms with which these Rites clothed the Masonic Teaching and the twofold aim it set for itself1. In 1717, there existed but a single, unique Freemasonry2. In 1728, the first Rite, that of the Scottish Ramsay, made its appearance 3. In 1743, the first French Rite, that of the Temple, was founded at Lyon 4 5 6 7. In 1730, a new Rite was created in England and another in France B. In 1738, two new Rites appeared in France G. In 1770, two Rites made their appearance in Germany 1 . In 1776, two new Rites appeared in Germany and one in France 8. In 1780, one was founded in Germany9. 1. 3In 1782, two in France 1 . In 1783, one in Germany2. In 1783, one in Sweden 3 4 5. In 1796, one in Germany A In 1801, a new Rite was founded in France, and one in North America A In 1805, a new Rite appeared in Italy6. In 1825, one in Mexico 7. In 1839, one in France8. In 1865, one in England9. So that, from 1717 to 1865, over a period of one hundred and forty-eight years, the Masonic doctrine of pure gnosticism was presented to adepts in twenty-four different ways, by means of twenty-four different procedures of staging. Of these twenty-four Rites, only twelve are still in full activity. These are the following: Two English, the York Rite and the Ancient and Primitive Rite. Two French, the Scottish-Modern Rite and the Rite of the Temple. Four German, the Rites of Fessier, Gumemdorf, Schreider and Knigge. One Italian, the Rite of Misraïm. One Swedish, the Rite of Swedenborg. One Mexican, the Mexican National Rite.
