1— 260 — and that, whatever the further duration of our days of schooling may be, they will nonetheless pass in better conditions, since the fifth round, that of the fifth principle, manas, or the intellect, the understanding of truth, draws near; then the Spirit of truth will guide us in all things, and it will be the advent of the new dispensation. Within esoteric Buddhism, we find a most complete scientific explanation of every phase of existence. We see there how the most ancient doctrine of transmigration, combined with the modern theory of evolution, can account for all the physical, mental, and moral events and circumstances. Far from the universe having been the product of the fiat of an omnipotent Being, it is seen to have been the result of an eternal growth, decomposition, and rebirth. We shall not try to inquire here to what extent these ideas, gathered from the annals of an « eternal Religion » said to have been preserved through the centuries by the Mahatmas, would appear acceptable to modern theology. In any case, they seem of a nature likely to be favorably received by science. All the laws of nature manifest an infinite intelligence and a mathematical exactness, and if we examine carefully the successive stages of nature, we shall find that all its operations are accomplished in a spirit as serious as it is tender, which is, we might even say, the very essence of thought and of love. Within our limited understanding, the supreme principle of existence can only be defined as an omnipotent intelligence, whose omnipotence is always directed by its love and by an infinite wisdom. The more we seek to fathom the laws of exis-
2— 261 — -tence, the more we shall find that they are the laws of absolute wisdom, of justice, and of love 1. 1. From a series of documents published by the American newspaper the Sun of July 20, 1890, it results that this doctrine is the work of M. de Palmes, who had long studied esoteric Science, and whose manuscripts were all bought up by the founders of the Theosophical Society. CHAPTER V BIRTH PSYCHURGY PART ONE BIRTH. — THE INCARNATION OF THE SOUL ACCORDING TO SCIENCE § I. — THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PLANT The preceding account has allowed us to determine the way in which man is constituted during life. Scarcely a few facts have been furnished to us on the further transformations of the seven principles, through the extract from esoteric Buddhism. We must now sum up, as best we can, what may be said touching the state of man before Birth and after Death. The theories currently admitted by the spiritualist schools of the West all come down to more or less disguised theological accounts. God created souls in infinite or determined number (according to the different schools); each — 264 —
3of these souls comes to undergo trials upon the Earth, and creates, through its conduct here below, its eternal salvation or its eternal loss, winning Paradise or Hell, with Purgatory for those who are condemned with extenuating circumstances. The profound illogic that emerges from this doctrine, the naiveties and the scientific errors with which it is accompanied, have not been long in reserving its use for the fanatical disciples of country priests. Contemporary Experimentalism has found a radical way of settling the difficulty: it is the denial of every immaterial principle. 11 n'y a rien before birth; there will be nothing after life bearing the trace of our personality; consequently, it is useless for serious people to concern themselves with the soul and with psychic phenomena. As everywhere, materialism has succeeded, through its very skepticism, in making important discoveries by starting from this point of view. But the facts have come to bring these conclusions to a timely halt, and the marvelous has made it known, despite everything, that one must reckon with it. How is the revolting injustice of the distribution of faculties here below to be reconciled with the theory of a just and good God? How is the existence of evil upon earth, marching hand in hand with the existence of good in the heavens, to be explained? It is to these various doubts that the theory of reincarnations comes to answer. This theory, upheld by all the revelations of the Orient, set forth by Orpheus, by Pythagoras, and by all those initiated into esoteric Science, may be summed up in a few words: The human soul undergoes, during its incarnation within the material body, the effect of the good or bad causes it has generated in the previous existence; it generates, through the manner in which it bears these trials, the good or bad causes that determine its subsequent state
