1The purpose of this table is to give the reader a clear and simultaneous idea of the teachings of esoteric Buddhism on these three important doctrines: — the Constitution of the Universe, the Constitution of Man, and his spiritual states pending after earthly life. It will be noticed that these principles are enumerated beginning from the outside and moving toward the inside, the first being only the outer covering that holds, within its inner folds, the seven others, the Pearl of Great Price, the Shekinah. But, in order to render these seven States, Principles, and Senses apparent to the outer eye, as well as to the intelligence, we have taken the liberty of representing them as rising from the earth in the form of a cross, which is the true symbol of man indicated by the architecture of the Christian Church1. This sign had already been employed as a sacred Symbol long before the Christian era; it is even so ancient that it is found again on the monograms of some of the planets. The mystery of this double emblem could fill volumes; let us say only that it is the true emblem of man and of woman. The figure of the cross, says Plato, exists within the Universe; its four inner spaces extend to Infinity — to the north, to the south, to the east, to the west. And thus, rising from earth to heaven, like the Tree of Life, man stands upright with Infinity around him and Eternity within. The transverse ray, which represents the arms of power and of glory, may also represent the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (which is the case in Hermetic Theosophy), whose fruit is within his reach; he stands in the midst of the garden, separating the highest principles from the lowest. It will be noticed that we have enclosed the said cross within 1. The sign of the cross made by Catholics while pronouncing the last words of the Lord's Prayer has a deeper meaning than they suspect. In saying « for thine is the kingdom », they first touch the forehead with the back of the thumb, then the vital region of the heart; thereby indicating that the first is the trunk, « the Seat of Mercy », the dwelling of the Lord of the Kingdom (or divine Wisdom, the woman). At the moment of saying « the power and the glory », the thumb first touches the right shoulder, then the left « (the right hand of power » — « the left hand of glory) ». « Forever and ever, amen, » the thumb is placed upon the first finger of the same hand in the form of a cross, then rises to the lips, which seal it with a kiss signifying « So be it » or Amen!
2— 229 — double triangle of two colors which, when interlaced, like the one above the cross, represents the « mystery of mysteries », the geometric synthesis of the whole occult doctrine. Under this form, it is called by the Cabalistic Jews the « seal of Solomon », and it is the Sri Antara of the Archaic Aryan Temple. It represents the Divinity in its supreme Essence « male and female », « Love and Wisdom », and contains the squaring of the Circle, the so-called Philosopher's Stone, the great problems of life and death, the mystery of good and evil (Viz, matter united with or separated from Spirit), etc., etc. When one considers the triangles around the Cross, one sees that they are separated, and that they will unite, interlace, and cross only little by little; the lower triangle rises degree by degree as man reaches the higher states. The dark nature, or the nature of the coarse fire, rises from earth to meet the luminous triangle that descends (the wisdom that comes from on high), just as sometimes the light of a torch that has just been extinguished appears above it and relights it. When, finally, the Red line reaches the Blue line, or sixth principle — the spiritual soul (the heavenly bride, or the Christ-state) — the triangles find themselves completely interlaced, and the Union is perfect, as in the divine Double Triangle that represents Nirvana. This center corresponds to the Central Principle within man, which is the axis on which his character must turn. This fourth principle is called Kama Rupa; it is the Will, or the Animal Soul, because animals possess it as well as man. It also corresponds physically to the great ganglionic center, called the Solar (or Soular) Plexus, and by the — 230 —
3ancients the « male brain », or the « brain of the belly » 1 , which is the first to live and the last to die within the nervous system, the receptacle, the vehicle, and the center of vitality, of sensation, of instinct, and of feeling, as well as of intuition, of nutrition, of move- 1. « Majupperikos (or brain behind the diaphragm). It is thus that the ancient Greeks called the Solar Plexus, and they attributed to it a large share in our inner sensations, in addition to the functions generally assigned to those nervous organs called the Epigastric Center (over the stomach), although, properly speaking, they are situated behind the stomach, or what is called the pit of the stomach. It is this Organic Plexus that moves the heart. « In every age and in every land, it has been supposed that these organs were the seat and center of emotion and of feeling; thus, in conversation, one speaks of sensations and feelings that strike at the heart or at the chest, and people carry their hands there, saying that their heart « leaps for joy », « throbs with pleasure », « is as light as a feather », or « as heavy as lead », but insofar as it concerns the heart, we might just as well say the stomach, the liver, or the spleen. « The cause lies deeper than that, behind these organs, where the « Genius » resides, watching over all the organs and all the functions; the word heart is only a figurative expression. This Genius is called the Solar Plexus, it is a tissue of nerves that carries and distributes vital force to all the organs.
