PRÉFACE Monsieur ^ Avant de livrer au public votre Traité méthodique de Science occulte, mus avez bien voulu le soumettre à mon jugement en me priant de vous dire ce que je pense de ï esprit général de ce livre et de celui de vos autres travaux à moi connus, dans le cas où vos opinions rie me paraîtraient pas contraires à ï idée que je me fais des conditions et des exigences de la science philosophique dans l’état actuel de la pensée humaine. Je n ai aucune raison de me refuser à la satisfaction de votre désir, pourvu que vous me permettiez de fixer avec précision les limites et l’intention dans lesquelles je me plais à vous F accorder . Je ne crois pas à l’existence d'une science occulte VI distincte par essence de la science ordinaire, affranchie des conditions imposées à celle-ci et qui devrait cependant être considérée comme ï origine, la source et la hase permanente de toutes nos connaissances . Cette idée, quoiqu’elle ait trouvé dans le passé et quelle compte encore dans le présent de nombreux partisans, est absolument irrationnelle, c est-à-dire antiscientifique. C’est une pure idole dont le culte appartient aux temps fabuleux.
3Mais si, sous le nom de science occulte, vous entendez parler clés premiers efforts et des premières découvertes de la science, de ces découvertes qui reposent sur ï analogie plutôt que sur le raisonnement et sur l’analyse, qui ont été provoquées par ï intuition qua l’homme de ï ordre universel de la nature et par la similitude des lois de l’univers avec celles de sa propre pensée, je vous donne complètement raison. Ces lois dont nous parlons étant toujours les mêmes, ont été soupçonnées et, si ï on peut parler ainsi, réclamées avant d'être démontrées . Puis la tradition s’en est emparée et les a transmises de siècle en siècle en son propre nom. C’est ainsi que la plus haute antiquité a possédé des notions vraies de physique, d’ astronomie, d’histoire naturelle, cï agriculture, de métallurgie, de mathématiques, d’ architecture , de chimie même et de médecine . C’est ainsi, exemple mémorable entre tous, que les pythagoriciens ont reconnu la rotation de la terre et des autres planètes, non pas autour du soleil, mais autour d’un feu central. vu Toutes les lois de la pensée, comme toutes les lois de la nature , existent à la fois, les unes dans la pensée, les autres dans T univers, mais plus ou moins développées, plus ou moins claires et toujours unies , toujours mêlées entre elles dans la proportion de la connaissance dont elles sont l objet.

PREFACE Sir, Before delivering your Methodical Treatise on Occult Science to the public, you were good enough to submit it to my judgment, asking me to tell you what I think of the general spirit of this book and of that of your other works known to me, in the event that your opinions did not seem to me contrary to the idea I hold of the conditions and requirements of philosophical science in the present state of human thought. I have no reason to refuse the satisfaction of your wish, provided you allow me to fix with precision the limits and the intention within which it pleases me to grant it to you. I do not believe in the existence of an occult science VI distinct in essence from ordinary science, exempt from the conditions imposed upon the latter, and which should nonetheless be regarded as the origin, the source, and the permanent basis of all our knowledge. This idea, though it found numerous partisans in the past and still counts many in the present, is absolutely irrational, that is to say, unscientific. It is a pure idol whose cult belongs to fabulous times.
3But if, under the name of occult science, you mean to speak of the first efforts and the first discoveries of science, of those discoveries which rest on analogy rather than on reasoning and analysis, which were prompted by man's intuition of the universal order of nature and by the resemblance of the laws of the universe to those of his own thought, I grant you complete agreement. These laws, of which we speak, being always the same, were suspected and, if one may put it so, claimed before being demonstrated. Then tradition took hold of them and transmitted them from century to century in its own name. It is thus that the highest antiquity possessed true notions of physics, of astronomy, of natural history, of agriculture, of metallurgy, of mathematics, of architecture, even of chemistry and of medicine. It is thus, a memorable example among all, that the Pythagoreans recognized the rotation of the earth and the other planets, not around the sun, but around a central fire. vii All the laws of thought, like all the laws of nature, exist at once, some in thought, others in the universe, but more or less developed, more or less clear, and always united, always mingled with one another in proportion to the knowledge of which they are the object.
