1Treatise on the Reintegration of Beings Before time, God emanated spiritual beings, for his own glory, within his divine immensity. These beings had to render a worship which the Divinity had fixed for them by eternal laws, precepts and commandments. They were therefore free and distinct from the Creator; and one cannot deny them the free will with which they were emanated without destroying in them the faculty, the property, the spiritual and personal virtue which were necessary to them in order to act with precision within the bounds wherein they were to exercise their power. It was positively within these bounds that these first spiritual beings were to render the worship for which they had been emanated. These first beings can neither deny nor be ignorant of the covenants which the Creator had made with them in giving them laws, precepts and commandments, since it was upon these covenants alone that their emanation was founded.
2It will be asked what these first beings were before their divine emanation, whether they existed or did not exist. They existed within the bosom of the Divinity, but without distinction of action, of thought, or of particular understanding; they could neither act nor feel save by the sole will of the superior being who contained them and in whom all was moved; which, truly, cannot be said to be existing; and yet this existence in God is of absolute necessity: it is this that constitutes the immensity of the divine power. God would not be the father and master of all things if he had not innate in him an inexhaustible source of beings, which he emanates of his pure will and when it pleases him. It is by this infinite multitude of emanations of spiritual beings outside himself that he bears the name of Creator, and his works that of the divine creation, spiritual and animal, spiritual temporal.
3The first spirits emanated from the bosom of the Divinity were distinguished among themselves by their virtues, their powers and their names. They occupied the immense divine circumference commonly called Domination, which bears its denary number according to the following figure O, and it is there that every spirit — superior 10, major 8, inferior and minor 4 — was to act and to operate for the greater glory of the Creator. Their demonstration, or their number, proves that their emanation comes in truth from the fourfold divine essence. The names of these four classes of spirits were stronger than those we commonly give to the cherubim, seraphim, archangels and angels, who have been emancipated only since. Moreover, these four first principles of spiritual beings had in them, as we have said, a part of the divine domination: a superior, major, inferior and minor power, by which they knew all that could exist, or be enclosed within the spiritual beings that had not yet come forth from the bosom of the Divinity. How, it will be said, could they have knowledge of things that did not yet exist distinctly and outside the bosom of the Creator? Because these
