1I shall speak more amply of this divine mercy in another place. I shall return again to the bringing forth of evil occasioned by the evil will of the spirit, and shall say that the evil bringing forth of the spirit, being nothing but the evil thought, is called spiritually evil intellect, even as the bringing forth of the good thought is called good intellect. It is by these sorts of intellect that the spirits, good and evil, communicate themselves to man and make him retain some impression, according as he uses his free will to reject or to admit the evil or the good, at his pleasure.
2We name intellect this insinuation, good or evil, of the spirits, because they act upon spiritual beings. The perverse spirits are subjected to the minors, having degenerated from their superior power by their prevarication. The good spirits are equally subjected to man by the quaternary power he received at his emanation. This universal power of man is announced by the word of the Creator, who says to him: "I have created all for thee; thou hast but to command in order to be obeyed." There is therefore no distinction to be made between the subjection in which the minor holds the good spirits and that in which he holds the evil spirits. Had man maintained himself in his state of glory, he would have served as a good and true intellect to the evil demons, even as they themselves made their evil intellect felt by the first minor and make it felt daily among us. By the power of command, man could have straitened them yet further in privation by refusing them all communication with him; which is figured to us by the inequality of the five fingers of the hand, whereof the middle finger figures the soul, the thumb the good spirit, the index the good intellect; the two other fingers figure equally the demoniac spirit and intellect.
3We shall easily comprehend by this figure that man had been emanated only to be always in view of the evil demon, to contain him and to combat him. The power of man was far superior to that of the demon, since this man joined to his own science that of his companion and of his intellect, and that by this means he could oppose three good spiritual powers against two feeble demoniac powers; which would have wholly subjugated the professors of evil, and consequently destroyed evil itself. It may be seen, by all that I have just said, that the origin of evil came from no other cause than the evil thought followed by the evil will of the spirit against the divine laws; and not that the spirit itself, emanated from the Creator, is directly evil; because the possibility of evil has never existed in the Creator. It is born solely of the disposition and will of his creatures. Those who speak otherwise do not speak with knowledge of cause concerning the things possible and impossible to the Divinity. When the Creator chastises his creature, he is given the name of just, and not that of author of the scourge he sends to preserve his creature from infinite chastisement.
