1This conduct was the more culpable in that their father Noah had recommended them to instruct their posterity in the manifestation of the divine justice, and that they themselves had promised him by oath to follow exactly the instructions they had received from their father by order of the Creator. But the weakness of these three men shows itself in their Noachite or Chinese descendants, who live in terrible fears of hideous beings, who render a worship to animals to which they give the most superstitious cares, in the idea of turning aside the evils they believe may be done them by these monsters, and whom they regard as Gods or as demons. This is what all these accounts teach us and what I cannot be ignorant of, having seen it and knowing it of myself. I shall not enter into the detail of the confusion that has arisen from it among these posterities, having nothing in common with the marvellous things of divine spiritual nature and of created universal nature wherein I wish to instruct you.
2Reflect well upon all I have said to you touching the different rules of division of time for the operations of the divine worship established among the three first nations. Is it not true that the sages of Egypt excelled in astronomy, and that what they operated was more considerable than what was operated among the Chinese? Was not the divine worship which Adam operated superior to that which the sages of Egypt operated? Did not Moses further surpass Abraham and the sages of Egypt by his operations? Is not the worship that was exercised in the temple of Solomon above all the preceding? In fine, did not Christ operate a worship infinitely greater than all the others of which I have spoken? It is this last that proves to us clearly that all the past forms of worship were but figures of what he did. I shall not enter into other details upon this subject, having said enough to convince you that the ceremonial, as well as the times suitable to the operations of the divine worship, were from the beginning regulated and fixed among men; that all these things were transmitted by the divine spirit, and that they proceed not from human conventions. Indeed, Christ left, for his divine spiritual institution, to his disciples the prayer and the daily invocation of six hours which complete the ordinary day of 24 hours. These same disciples, who compose the Christian Church, still make today their prayer and their invocation four times a day; this recalls the first spiritual order of the divine worship established among the first Noachite nations by the wise children of Noah.
3Secondly, Christ fixed for his disciples the time when they should exercise the four great divine forms of worship, and the Christian Church faithfully observes this institution by its four great annual feasts, whereof two must be made at the two solstices and the two others at the two equinoxes. This is what recalls the second spiritual order of the divine worship established among those first nations of which we have spoken long enough. I shall now undertake to speak to you of the type which Abraham makes in this universe. You know that the name of Abram was changed into that of Abraham. The first name signifies a carnal terrestrial father, raised above the ordinary fathers of terrestrial material posterities; and so there has never been among the particular temporal fathers a man more raised in carnal posterity than Abram. This is why the Scripture calls him Abram, father raised, and not Abraham, father raised in a multitude of posterities in God, such as should have been operated by Adam in his state of glory, but who, by his prevarication, became father raised in terrestrial material posterity. It is true that Abraham has succeeded in this to the default of Adam, since from Abraham there truly issued a posterity of God. It is, indeed, in the society of Abraham that the Creator made his general and particular election: the first, to manifest his justice, and the other, to manifest his glory.
