1pretext of a supposed blind faith which has made them lose totally the idea of true faith. Faith without works cannot be regarded as true faith, although one may very well have the works of faith without having faith itself. I shall say moreover that the works which man can produce by the feeble faith that is innate in all men cannot be considered as truly belonging to faith: the faith of man cannot be living and perfect if it is not actuated by a superior agent; and it is then that man produces works which are no longer deemed to belong to him, and which manifest all the force of the faith that acts within him. They have abandoned the spiritual sciences to give themselves to negotiation and to the cupidity of the goods of matter, which has placed so thick a veil upon their eyes that they are almost all in the same blindness wherein was the posterity of Cain and the greater part of that of Seth.
2We know that this blindness of the first posterities, as well as that into which Israel fell, was a striking repetition of the privation wherein Adam was during all the time that the Creator exercised his justice against him; this spiritual inaction is the punishment of every spirit that withdraws from the Creator, because no spiritual being in divine privation can operate divine worship unless he has received from the Eternal his reconciliation, as Adam represents to us and as several others have represented after him by their types and by their symbols. A type says more than the symbol; a type is a real figure of a past fact, as also of a fact that is to come to pass shortly. The symbol only gives information upon the type of an event to come. A type, in fine, is superior to prophecy, in that the prophets make only threats for the future, which may be withdrawn by the mercy of the Creator and the change of conduct of the people upon whom the prophecy falls; whereas a type announces an infallible event which is under the immutable decree of the Creator. We cannot therefore be ignorant that this first posterity was struck and punished horribly, as was the people of Israel, for the abandonment they had made of the Creator and of the worship for which they had been formed.
3I shall now ask you in what situation the world was at the advent of Christ among men. What was the worship they rendered to the Creator? Had they not made a public market of his Temple, or did they know any other gods than matter? Whence proceeded their merchandise? And did these material negotiations not plunge them into idolatry! We may believe these facts the more easily in that we have before our eyes the repetition of them in the men of today. It is admitted among them that one must forget the Creator in order to grow rich temporally. These men represent to us perfectly the two past epochs, namely: that of the posterity of Adam and that of Israel. We see physically the same conduct, the same example, the same habits, among the men of this age. The empire of the demons triumphs to the prejudice of the feeble minors. These minors have so greatly withdrawn from the divine worship, and become defiled and impure by the alliance they make every day with the perverse spirits, that they must expect punishments infinitely more terrible than those that fell upon the first posterities, since the present posterity has seen and heard speak directly Him who operated all spiritual reconciliation, and Him by whom the Creator has manifested all his works to the eyes of the creature.
