Mais le second de ces successeurs, ou celui qui occupait la partie du Midi, ainsi que ceux qui vinrent après lui, ne voulut jamais changer de calcul; il persévéra à solliciter la nation de Cham, qu'il instruisit, de ne jamais déranger l’ordre qu'il avait établi pour fixer les jours, les mois, les années parmi elle par autorité divine, menaçant ces peuples de la malédiction du Créateur s'ils suivaient l'exemple des deux autres nations, savoir, celle de Sem et celle de Japhet. 1These last successors of whom we speak changed again the time of their operations and fixed it at the time of two weeks, so that there were no longer among these nations more than two operations in a lunar month. These operations were made at the beginning and at the end of the crescent of the moon, that is to say at the renewal and a little before the full moon; and, as each of the principal operators operated only once, the time of their seven operations comprehended about three months of our ordinary combination. This was a new rule for fixing their spiritual year, and one they followed again for a century and a half of time known to us. The first of these three successors, who occupied the region of the west, coming to decease, he who replaced him no longer had the great worship operated save once in the four seasons, namely at the equinox of March of each
2year, and the rest of the time was likewise consecrated to instruction. But the second of these successors, or he who occupied the region of the South, as well as those who came after him, would never change his calculation; he persevered in soliciting the nation of Ham, which he instructed, never to disturb the order he had established for fixing the days, the months, the years among it by divine authority, threatening these peoples with the malediction of the Creator if they followed the example of the two other nations, namely that of Shem and that of Japheth. These three nations have each followed the convention of their last spiritual calculation: Ham in taking the four seasons for four years; Japheth in taking from the equinox of March to the equinox of the month of March following; Shem in following the two equinoxes for two years. These three nations have likewise introduced this calculation into their civil history, and they have persevered in it with obstinacy after the iniquitous operations which Nimrod made in Babylon, until they were shamefully separated from the divine worship and dispersed among all the peoples, whereof I shall speak hereafter. It is from these nations that there have come, among all the peoples of the world, the knowledge of astronomy and of the faculties of power of the planetary stars over the general and particular creation. By all that I have just said upon the divisions which the Noachites made of their days, of their months and of their years, one sees for what reason they say themselves older than Adam by 15 or by 20 000 years, and older than us by 25 000 years. We ought not to be surprised that the nations do not regard the deluge as universal, and even
3that they claim never to have seen it. The three men from whom issued the three posterities that formed the three nations were the only ones among all these peoples who had been witnesses of the deluge. They could not think of that scourge without shuddering: they took every possible means of effacing that event from their memory; they never spoke to their posterity of what might have relation to the horrible and frightful things they had seen, and this in order not to terrify the men who had proceeded from them, and not to retrace before their eyes the detail of the evils which the prevaricators had caused to fall upon the earth.
