1The circumcision, or the effusion of the blood of Abraham, was a true type of the purification of corporeal matter. This effusion of blood served further to purify the passive life and to dispose it to retain the impression of the different divine spiritual operations which the Creator had enjoined anew upon His Servant Abraham in order to turn him from the false worship he was operating to the prejudice of that of the Divinity. It is not doubtful that, by this wholly spiritual operation, the passive life, or the animal soul, was entirely bound with the impassive life, or active spiritual soul. Nevertheless, despite this reason, the passive soul and the impassive soul had always each their particular number which distinguished them perfectly in all their temporal virtues and powers; and what proves it is the difference of their number. The passive soul is in possession only of the imperfect ternary number 3, and the impassive soul is in possession of the quaternary number 4, which suffices to demonstrate their particular difference and distinction. Then, to make thee comprehend that these two lives, inferior and minor, passive and impassive, proceed from pure spirit and that their bond is perfect and intimate, thou hast only to add the two numbers that constitute them in their spiritual temporal faculties. This addition shall give the septenary number 7 of the major spirit whence they emanate.
2As for the change of name which I tell thee was made by the sole will of the spirit of the Creator, and not by the will of man, thou wilt not be able to doubt it when thou observest that no patriarch has borne the name of his material origin and that they are all different one from another. There are ten patriarchs, there are ten spiritual names that operate the worship of the Divinity by its own denary number. Observe further whether, since Noah, thou findest among the patriarchs any original material name, whether in that posterity of Noah, or in that of Ishmael, or in that of Heber. This is therefore what shows thee that the change of the spiritual name, in the place and stead of the original one of man, comes from God. The spiritual name given to the impassive soul announces to thee and makes thee further understand the conjunction of a distinct and spiritual being, or of a particular septenary spirit, which the Creator has subjected to the powerful virtue of the quaternary minor spirit, as it teaches that he joined himself to his first man-God after his reconciliation. It is again by this conjunction that the Eternal God of Israel makes all his creature conceive the precept that one must love one's neighbour as oneself. This bond, this friendship, this understanding must be understood only from spirit to spirit and not from temporal matter to spirit. Such is that true neighbour whom thou must cherish and love as thyself.
3I tell thee in truth, Israel, that this operation of election, or of spiritual name given to the soul or to the minor, shall be perpetuated, from the Eternal, among the idolatrous peoples more in privation of the knowledge of the true worship of the Divinity — which is clearly manifested today in the Christian Church by the sacrament of baptism, where the newborn receives a spiritual name wholly different from that which he bears by his material temporal origin.
