1Adam, in his first state of justice, as I have just given to understand, truly received from the divine spirit all the sciences and all the spiritual knowledge; that is to say the certain road and an exact plan of all the divine spiritual operations for which he had been emanated; but having made a criminal use of his powers, the Creator at once withdrew them from him and left this unhappy Adam, even after his reconciliation, susceptible of being a man of error in all his human, spiritual and temporal operations, which befalls man every time he operates only in virtue of those three ternary powers, which are: the aerial, terrestrial and fiery Powers. It is dangerous for the man of desire to use these three powers in any operation whatsoever, without having beforehand obtained from the Creator the quaternary power which was withdrawn from us by the prevarication of Adam; and it is the want of this quaternary power that makes us feel that man, since the prevarication of Adam, is a man of error; and it is the want of this quaternary power that makes us feel further that man is truly in divine spiritual privation. He is
2true that man can sometimes come out of this privation during the course of his temporal course, but it is never for long, the Creator, who is immutable, having said expressly to his reconciled man that no knowledge of the divine sciences would be restored to him until he should have earned it by the labours that were prescribed to him for the second time. It is since that epoch that man is ignorant and bounded; which would not have befallen him had he directed his quaternary power according to the instructions of the Creator.
3Besides the striking types which Seth made of the spiritual reconciliation and of the stability of the laws of nature, he made further truly that of the divine mercy, since he replaced Abel, since he prayed for the grace of his brother Cain, which he appears to have obtained, whether by the expiation which Cain made of his crime through the kind of death wherewith he was struck, or by the penitence which Boaz made for the involuntary crime he had committed upon the form of that same Cain. You must not doubt that these two minors obtained mercy from the Creator, by the virtue and holiness of the blessed man Seth. If you ask me what is the physical proof that may lead you to believe that what I say upon this subject is certain, I shall answer that, when you shall have had the happiness of knowing the kind of labour of Seth, that which the sages operated after him, as well as the labours of Moses and of Christ, you will put such questions to me no more. Had you been in the society of those celebrated sages, you would take care not to speak in such a manner. You would have contented yourself with admiring their deeds, without seeking to understand what they said; for it would have been as difficult for you to comprehend their questions and their discourses as their deeds, which were operated in nature before those who were present.
