1posterity counts upon itself, and how it builds itself up from the inspiration, good or evil, which it receives from the good or from the evil spirit in the places of darkness it inhabits. It is by reason of its coming into this state contrary to its spiritual nature that we name the posterity of Adam pensive and thinking, by the communication of its intellectual being, good and evil, wherewith man has rendered himself susceptible of being surrounded. But it must nevertheless be observed here that there have been minors who received birth and temporal life by the sole will and operation of God. These minors were destined for the manifestation of the glory of the Eternal, and, although their form was emanated from the posterity of Adam, the minor who inhabited that form was truly a pure thinking being, without ever being pensive. And why so? Because the Eternal manifested to him his own will by the vision of one of his deputies, who announced to him, without any mystery, what he was to do in order to operate exactly the divine will. Intellectual inspiration is one thing, and the act of visual operation of the spirit is another; which I shall make comprehensible in speaking of minors who were emanated before Adam by the sole will of the Creator, and to manifest his glory.
2In the first times of the posterity of the first man, Heli, whom we call Christ and whom we recognise with certainty for a thinking being, reconciled Adam with the creation. Enoch reconciled the first posterity of Adam under the posterity of Seth. Noah reconciled the second posterity of Adam, in reconciling his own with the Creator, and thereafter reconciled the earth with God. Melchizedek confirmed these three first reconciliations in blessing the works of Abraham and his three hundred servants. This blessing is a repetition of that which God gave to the three children of Noah, namely: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Abraham and his three hundred servants form the perfect number four and recall the same quaternary number which Noah had formed with his three children.
3It is by the octonary number, resulting from the conjunction of these two quaternary numbers, that we learn that all the reconciliations and confirmations of which we have just spoken were made directly by Christ. For although they were operated by the assistance of minors emanated to that end, these minors, nevertheless, were but apparent figures of which Christ made use to manifest the glory and the mercy of the Creator in favour of the reconciled. We know with certainty that the number eight is innate of double power given by the Creator to Christ; and it is he who teaches us that the Messiah has operated all things in favour of the temporal men of this first and second posterity of Adam. We regard as the second posterity of Adam the posterity of Seth, because it has rendered itself susceptible of reconciliation, and we do not comprehend therein that of Cain, because it is still to be reconciled and still pays tribute to the justice of the Creator. We must conceive it clearly by the type which the malediction figures to us that Cain received from his father Noah [Editorial: the source reads thus; the malediction after the ark is that of Noah upon Canaan, Genesis ix], after the resting of the ark upon the earth. His exile has remained fixed in the region of the south: this is that sign, immemorial to men from generation to generation, that the posterity of Cain is not yet spiritually reintegrated in all its personal powers and virtues, although it is no longer permanent upon this terrestrial surface.
