1let him succumb without succumbing yourself? If, on the contrary, your deputy goes to the combat observing point by point the laws of order you have given him, and returns triumphant, you will reward him with all your power as a friend faithful to your orders. But if, having departed from your laws, he comes to succumb, you will punish him, because he had the strength in hand. Yet this deputy being vanquished, are you vanquished likewise? No. There is therefore none but he to blame, and upon whom all your indignation must fall, as being a forger and a perjurer; and so you will hold him in opprobrium. Moreover, if your deputy, having received your orders to go and combat your enemies, instead of attacking them and overthrowing them, should join himself to them, and all together should come to give you battle, and seek by this means to render you subject to them instead of their being subject to you, how would you consider this deputy? You would regard him as a traitor, and you would keep yourself more than ever upon your guard against him. Well, this is positively what the prevarication of the first man is towards the Creator. It is for this that the angel of the Lord says, according as it is related in the Scriptures: "let us drive hence the man who has had knowledge of good and of evil, for he might trouble us in our wholly spiritual functions, and let us take heed that he touch not the tree of life, and that he live not by this means for ever." (The tree of life is nothing else than the spirit of the Creator, which the minor unjustly attacked with his allies.) That he live not for ever signifies: that he live not eternally, as the first demoniac spirits do, in a cursed virtue and power.
2Without this punishment, the first man would not have done penance for his crime; he would not have obtained his reconciliation; he would not have had his posterity, and would have remained minor of the demoniac minors whose subject he had become. Whereas by his spiritual reconciliation he has been restored by the Creator to the same virtues and powers he had before against the unfaithful to the divine law. It is by this reconciliation that he has obtained a second time powers for and against every created being. It is for him to use them with wisdom and moderation, and no more to employ his free will according to the mind of the enemies of the Creator, for fear of becoming for ever the tree of life of evil.
3Let us return to the prevarication of Adam. If you knew the kind of Adam's prevarication and the fruit he received from it, you would no longer regard as unjust the penalty the Creator has laid upon us at our birth and has rendered reversible upon our posterity until the end of the ages. Adam was emanated the last of every creature whatsoever; he was placed at the centre of the universal creation, general and particular; he was clothed with a power superior to that of every emanated being, in relation to the employment for which the Creator destined him: the angels themselves were submitted to his great virtue and to his powers. It was in reflecting upon a state so glorious that Adam conceived and operated his evil will at the centre of his first glorious couch, which is commonly named the terrestrial paradise, and which we mysteriously call: earth raised above all sense. This place is so named by the friends of wisdom, because it was in this place, known under the name of Moriah, that the Temple of Solomon has since been built. The construction of that temple truly figured the emanation of the first man. To be convinced of it, one has only to observe that the temple of Solomon was built without the help of tools composed of metals; which showed to all men that the Creator had formed the first man without the help of any material physical operation.
