1I shall not leave you ignorant that what befell Cain had been prophesied by a sign perceptible to the children of Noah who, however, did not comprehend it. This sign was the escape of the raven, which fled from the ark before the earth was uncovered. It directed its flight towards the South and returned no more to take its place in the ark. Even those who had remained in the ark saw it no more after they had come out of it. This flight of the raven shows us, by its type, that no event, unhappy or happy, befalls man without his having been able to foresee it, and without its having been announced to him in some fashion or other. Provided he will reflect upon his thought, he will soon see the evil or the good that must result to him from it, because the good intellect will have nothing operate upon the creature it protects without letting it glimpse what must befall it of good or of evil. You might ask me why the first posterity of Adam in Cain is not yet reconciled with the Creator. Christ, you will say to me, did he not come to reconcile the living and the dead with the Creator? Has not God the Son, by his passion and the effusion of his blood, opened the gates of the kingdom of heaven to all those who were dead in divine privation? Thus this posterity of Adam in Cain must be comprehended in the reconciliation. I shall answer to this that Christ has reconciled with God
2with the Father only those whom the spiritual operation of the just had marked with the seal. This seal was sent to them visibly and without any mystery as to the use they were to make of it in favour of those who were to receive it, that they might be disposed to fortify themselves more and more in faith and in confidence in the mercy of the Creator, and to the end that they might sustain with an invincible firmness the whole powerful manifestation of divine justice which could be operated spiritually before them by Christ, among all the inhabitants of the earth living in divine privation. What I say here has truly been operated by Christ, as I shall now make more clearly conceivable.
3We cannot doubt the virtue and the omnipotence of God the Son, who is truly the direct action of the will of the Creator, father of all things. Still less can we doubt that all creation was operated by the Creator in the presence of this divine Son, who said at each act of operation of divine thought: all is good. That he might say such a thing, it was needful indeed that he should know to the bottom the principle of the operating thought of the Creator. He knew, in effect, all the goodness and all the validity of the holy operating thoughts which the Creator operated before him, and he himself applauded by the joy and the delight he felt in saying: I am in thee and in thy works, almighty creator, as thou art in me and in my works. I have bound within their bounds all the things thou hast created, according as thy will has ordained. He who walks after thee and me shall verify and confirm all thy works and mine, and he shall teach to all divine spiritual beings thy will
