1I tell thee moreover that when thou shalt have undergone the effects of the divine justice and when thou shalt have lost thy principal spiritual conducting chiefs, thou shalt make every effort to procure thyself others; but thou shalt find only ordinary elect, who shall be simple temporal conductors and even more material than spiritual. They shall lead thee into the dark and horrible path whence the Eternal drew thee, and they shall leave thee to groan in the shadow of thy crime. Consider and tremble, Israel, at all the misfortunes wherewith I threaten thee on the part of the Eternal. The succour of Moses and of Joshua shall be invoked by thee, but uselessly; for the more thou callest upon them, the further thou shalt remove them from thee. It is in this that the justice of the Creator shall be still greater against Israel than it has been; and it is thus that shall be accomplished in all its points the immutable decree He has pronounced against the prevaricators of His worship and their accomplices.""
2By all you have just seen upon the actions, reflections and operations, good and evil, of Israel, as also upon the regularity of the works of its principal conducting chiefs, you may be convinced that all that was predicted to this people befell it exactly. And so I shall not enter into the detail of the scourges and of all the sufferings which this people underwent, according as Moses had announced it to them before separating from them. Sacred history and profane history set forth amply enough all these facts, such as the ark lost, the dispersion of the tribes under Rehoboam, who lost seven of them entirely and let five others fall into the slavery and the servitude of the strange nations without hope of being able to succour them. But nevertheless this dispersion of the tribes deserves that you make serious reflections upon it. Seven of these
3tribes separated themselves from Rehoboam, son and heir of Solomon. Never was the place of their retreat or the road they took to reach it known to Rehoboam himself nor to the five tribes fallen into slavery, nor in fine to any nation whatsoever. Reflect moreover that, upon the numbering of the twelve tribes into two parts, the major and septenary number is withdrawn into a place of peace and of tranquillity out of all human and profane correspondence, and the inferior quinary number has remained wandering and vagabond, covered with shame and confusion, in servitude among all the nations where these unhappy tribes are deprived of all divine spiritual action and operation. What can such an event represent to the men of the earth, if not the true assertion of the evil and of the good proceeded from the two sorts of spirits, good or evil? See whether what I have told you upon this subject is not clear, since the number 2 is that of confusion. See also, in the separation of the tribes of Israel into two parts, whether the septenary number of those tribes, which the men of the earth have lost from sight, is not the true type of the minor Elect whom the Eternal withdraws from among the profane and the permanently impure of the earth and thereby sets beyond all intellectual communication with ordinary mortals. The Creator permits moreover that these ordinary mortals should forget, through the succession of times, the memory of these happy beings; and that, being ignorant of their fixed dwelling and of the road they took to reach it, they should be ignorant also of their works, their actions and their spiritual temporal operations. Still more, they are themselves ignorant of the conduct
