1It was not so with Christ, with Abel, with Elijah, nor with Enoch, as much for their spiritual being as for their material form. I shall tell you moreover, touching Enoch, that his advent in the world predicted that of a universal reconciliation; that the sign which appeared at his birth predicted that which appeared at the birth of the same reconciler; and that his type is that of three distinct operations which Christ had to perform among men for the manifestation of the divine glory, for the salvation of men and for the molestation of the demons. These three operations are: the first, which was made for the reconciliation of Adam; the second, for the reconciliation of the human race, in the year of the world 4000; the third, which must appear at the end of times, and which repeats the first reconciliation of Adam, reconciling all his posterity with the creator, for the greater mortification and for the humiliation of the prince of the demons and of his adherents. It will be then that these perverse spirits will recognise their error and their abominations, remaining for an immemorial time in the shadow of death and in divine privation and in the most terrible groanings. It will be then that they will do a labour more painful and more considerable than they do during the duration of the temporal ages.
2I shall not here enter into the detail of the kind of labour these perverse spirits must do, nor into the explanation of the number 49, having to treat these two points in another place. I must likewise speak to you elsewhere of the type of Enoch, when I enter upon the recital of the epochs; thus I shall hold to all that I have said to you until now, and I shall pass to the explanation of the type of Noah. Noah is a considerable and striking type of the universal, terrestrial, general and particular creation of all the apparent corporeal forms. He is by his denary number the type of the Creator, having been born the tenth of the patriarchs and the last of the chief fathers of families of the posterity of Adam before the deluge; and it is he who, by his posterity, has perpetuated that of Adam, which the deluge had effaced from the terrestrial surface. Before going further, I must enter into the details of the motives that occasioned the deluge. The would-be learned who do not conceive its possibility, and who are ignorant why the Creator sent this scourge upon the earth, do not hesitate to deny this fact. They turn into ridicule those who give it credence, and they regard as imaginary personages even those to whom the Creator had imparted this event before it came to pass, and the decree he had made in his immensity. But without stopping at their feeble objections, I shall teach you that this decree was launched only to
3the manifestation of the divine justice against the demoniac chiefs who had entirely revolted against the Creator by the infinite persecutions they exercised upon the minors. The immense conquests they had made over these unhappy minors had so greatly puffed up the demoniac chiefs that they believed themselves invincible, and even more powerful than the Creator.
