1But the true prevarication of Jacob is to have surprised the good faith of his father, to have employed all his faculties and all the possible spiritual and temporal means to read the thought of his brother Esau, to have wished to oppose himself to the good action of that thought advantageous to his brother, to have supplanted him by this means in all his spiritual rights, and to have reduced him, and all his posterity, into subjection and divine privation. We see moreover in Jacob the double prevarication of the demons, namely, that which they exercised against the Creator, and that against the creature and its posterity. Indeed, did not Jacob prevaricate in the first place against his father and secondly against his younger brother Esau, even as the demon prevaricated against his divine father and against the minor his spiritual father? Do not men retrace for us every day the same thing by the false conduct they hold, whether towards the Creator or towards their brothers? For the rest, you must not be surprised that Jacob behaved as he did towards Esau. Esau preferred the terrestrial worship to that of the Creator; he occupied himself entirely with the chase and with the destruction of wild animals, instead of applying himself to combating the demoniac intellect that had seized
2upon his brother Jacob. And so the abandonment he made of the divine spiritual worship, to give himself only to cares purely material, drew upon him the punishments he deserved and caused him to be stripped of all his spiritual rights. Esau nevertheless returned from his straying; he conceived, by the divine mercy, the extent of his prevarications; and, seeing himself fallen from all his spiritual, divine and temporal rights, he fell into the deepest consternation. He could not forbear to complain to his father of the usurpation his brother Jacob had made upon him; he made him conceive what a sorrow it must be for him to have come first into the world and to find himself the last as to spiritual goods. This was already to show a real figure of what would come to pass thereafter to Israel who, from spiritual elder in the world and first heir of the divine law, would be supplanted by those who were to come only after him — and to confirm to us thereby that prediction of the Scripture that the first shall be the last.
3Esau, after having uselessly made all his representations to his father and seeing that he could not move him, said to him in a heated word: "Have you directly reserved for me no blessing?" Under the name of blessing, Esau wished to try to obtain from his father some power or some spiritual gift, seeing himself out of a state to operate any divine worship for the glory of the Creator. This makes us see that God gives to his elect, without any temporal distinction, the knowledge of his spiritual gifts for the advantage of the men of the earth, even as he ordains these same elect to transmit their gifts and their spiritual virtues only to those who are worthy of such an
