1Doubt not, Israel, that since thou hast innate in thee a Word of material reproduction, thy first father had in him a Word of spiritual and glorious reproduction. That terrible change to which the Creator subjected Adam was the least penalty He could inflict upon His prevaricating minor, the crime of that minor having been so violent and so considerable that the abomination and the scandal of that iniquitous operation penetrated even into the divine court. The prevarication of the first spirits had already defiled that divine court, as I have said above, and consequently that defilement had subjected all the spiritual beings inhabiting the different classes of that court to a change in their law of action and of operation. But the prevarication being infinitely greater than that of the demons, those same spirits, inhabitants of the immensity, then felt an attraction still stronger than the first time; and that accursed operation of man operated upon them a new change in their laws of action and of operation, that is to say that at the instant of the crime of Adam, the Creator made force of law upon the spiritual beings of His immensity, and their laws of action and of operation were no longer the same as they had been, not only before the prevarication of the first
2spirits, but at the time of the emanation of the first man. See what have been the consequences of that horrible prevarication. Never pretend, Israel, to compare the force of law which men use among themselves with that which the Eternal has employed against all His spiritual temporal creature: the force of law which men have established among themselves is wholly material and founded upon human conventions (this is so true that they can never take place without the help of a number of men proportioned to the intention of the temporal chief, legislator of the people he governs). And so the execution of this temporal force of law is not always entire nor perfect; but the force of divine law needs only the sole will of the Creator to have its accomplishment. The Creator, to place any being whatsoever in divine privation, founds Himself neither upon the help of His divine court, nor upon that of divine temporal spiritual beings, and still less upon the employment of that gross matter in use among men; He needs but His sole thought and His sole will for all to act according to His pleasure. Such is the infinite difference of the force of the divine law, eternal and immutable, from the force of human law, which passes and effaces itself as promptly as the corporeal form of man effaces itself from off the earth as soon as the minor spirit separates itself from that form.
3But thou wilt doubtless ask me, Israel, to instruct thee wherein consists the change of the laws of action and of operation that came upon the inhabitants of the immensity by the prevarication of the first spirits, and that came upon all spiritual beings, whether divine or temporal, by the prevarication of the first man. I shall answer thee that, as there have been two prevarications, there have likewise been two changes in the laws of action and of operation of the inhabitants of the immensity — a change which consists in this, that these beings, who before had only purely spiritual functions, have become more or less subject to the temporal; which I shall now make thee conceive.
