1After Abel had fulfilled his spiritual functions according to his orders, he withdrew from his own prostration and went to render account to his father of what he had learned from the Creator in his favour. Adam then set Abel in his own northern place and went thereafter, all trembling, to make his prostration as Abel had made it. When he had finished, he called his two sons to him, placing Abel on his right and Cain on his left, and in this posture Adam imparted to them what he had learned from the Creator. "I forewarn you," he said to them, "from the Eternal Creator, that I have obtained grace before him: his justice has ceased to be reversible upon me by the intermission and mediation of my son Abel, whose holiness the Creator has heard in my favour. Come, my two sons, that I may share my joy with you, imparting to you two sensations I have just experienced, that of the evil and that of the good which makes my perfect reconciliation with the Creator." Then, addressing himself to Cain, he said to him: "My firstborn son, may your works in future be those of your last-born brother. Learn from me that the Creator places his confidence without any distinction of temporal and spiritual origin, and that he grants all superior power to him or to her who knows how to merit it, and to whom it is due. May your will, Cain, be in future that of your brother Abel, even as mine shall inviolably be in future that of the Creator.""
2The ceremonial began at the half of the solar day, and the whole lasted only about one hour of time. The more the signs came towards their son Abel, the more their three firstborn became the enemies of their own brother. Adam and Eve regarded Abel as a divine spiritual interpreter, and they observed with precision all that he told them and made them do, in joy and in holiness. The three firstborn, on the contrary, opposed themselves to all that Abel operated in their own favour and in that of their father and mother; they went so far as to lay snares of operations contrary to his, to destroy him and efface him physically from before them, which they did, as is now to be learned.
3Adam purposed one day to render to the Creator, conjointly with his two sons, the worship of a divine spiritual operation; but his female posterity being unable to assist at it, by reason of the small divine virtues and powers innate in the females and of their small strength and firmness to sustain such operations, he removed that female posterity to a distance of forty-five cubits from the place he had chosen for his work. All being disposed, Adam ordained and consecrated his last-born, Abel, to be the first to exercise the spiritual functions of the operation he purposed to make. Abel at once set about fulfilling them; he himself raised the altar, or the fitting circles, at the centre of which he himself offered the first perfumes. These perfumes were his own corporeal form, which he offered in holocaust to the Creator, prostrating himself humbly. He submitted at the same time his minor spiritual Being to the Eternal, to be the receptacle of the divine justice, upon which the Eternal manifested his greatest glory of mercy towards Adam his first minor creature. Adam, the work being finished, and the operators withdrew each to his ordinary destination, Cain to the side of his two sisters, and Abel to the side of his father and his mother.
