1Such are the abominations that were figured by the crime of Cain. Abel was truly his temporal brother, both being issued from the same man, but there was no comparison to be made between the operations that had co-operated in the formation of the one and of the other. The form of Cain had been conceived in the excess of the voluptuousness of the senses of matter, and retraced to us sensibly the prevarication of the first man. That of Abel, on the contrary, was conceived without excess of the material senses and with all the purity of the laws of nature; and so this form was rather spiritual than material, and it is by this spiritual conception that we regard the form of Abel as a true figure of the form of Christ, proceeded spiritually from an ordinary form, without the help of material physical operations and without the participation of the senses of matter.
2On the other hand, this corporeal formation of Christ retraces for us the material incorporation of the first man, who, after his prevarication, was stripped of his body of glory, and himself took one of gross matter in casting himself into the entrails of the earth. For before this divine spirit, doubly powerful and superior to every emanated being, came to operate the divine justice among men, he inhabited the pure and glorious circle of the divine immensity. But when he was deputed by the Creator, he quitted this spiritual dwelling to come and enclose himself within the womb of a virgin girl. Now does not the absence which this minor Christ makes from his true abode recall to us the expulsion of the first man from his body of glory? Does not the entry of this spiritual major, or word of the Creator, into the body of a virgin girl clearly recall to us the entry of the first minor into the abysses of the earth, to clothe himself with a body of matter? The different pains and the revolutions which the body of this virgin girl undergoes in pregnancy and in childbirth are the figure of the subjection and of the demoniac spiritual revolutions which the general terrestrial body shall endure and is obliged to endure in relation to the prevarication of Adam.
3God having then cursed the earth and delivered it to rigorous sufferings, the persecutions which the different nations have made upon the body of the virgin and upon her fruit represent to us those which the demons of the different regions have made and make upon the general terrestrial and particular body, as also upon the minors contained therein. The defeat of the body of Christ, destroyed by the hand of men, proves to us well also that the demons have power over the corporeal forms of apparent matter; but it must be known that these same demons cannot hinder the reintegration of the spirituous substances that compose the forms, those substances not having proceeded from them. They can indeed also destroy the particular form, but not the general terrestrial form, which is to end only at the time prescribed and limited by the Creator. The defeat of the corporeal individual of Christ, operated by men in the presence of the two women, Mary of Zebedee and Mary Magdalene, had been figured by the murder committed by Cain upon his brother Abel in the presence of his two sisters. The two women I have just named followed Christ in all his divine spiritual operations, even as the two sisters of Cain had followed their brother in all his demoniac operations.
