1The number of confusion is that which directs what we call simple and particular operation, which is made of the pure will of the minor with the demoniac spiritual major. These two subjects make but one by the intimate bond of their thought, their intention and their action. Nevertheless they are always two subjects distinct one from the other, in that they are always susceptible of disunion; which happens when a mediator more powerful than they places himself between the one and the other, and operates between them a reaction opposed to the first. By this means a considerable change is made in favour of the minor, in containing the action of the demoniac major. Thus it is the conjunction with this demoniac being that we call operation of confusion, and which we distinguish by the number two. You might ask me whether, when the minor joins himself to the good spiritual major, he does not equally make the number two, or of confusion. But I shall answer no, seeing that the good spirit which makes conjunction with a minor cannot join itself with that minor unless it has beforehand communicated to that same minor its spirit intellect, which we call: minor spiritual power, which prepares and disposes the particular minor soul to receive impression from the good major spirit, according to the will and the desire of that same major spirit and of the particular minor. The soul, by this conjunction, acquires the number two which,
2joining itself to the spirit, forms at first a ternary number; namely: the innate power of the first minor, which is the soul, 1; the minor power of the intellect, 2; and the direct power of the major spirit, 3. Such is how the minor soul makes the ternary number in its first principle of spiritual conjunction. We do not so reckon the conjunction that is made of the soul with the demoniac intellect, and thereafter with the evil spirit, because in that conjunction the soul entirely abandons its good spiritual power to become itself the intellect of the demon; whereas, in its conjunction with the good spirit, it preserves and fortifies its divine spiritual power, which deserves consequently to be reckoned in the enumeration we make of it. The good major spirit holding its action immediately from the Divinity, the soul has consequently its regular correspondence with the four divine powers which we call the fourfold essence, as follows: the minor soul, 1, is in spiritual correspondence with the intellect, 2; the intellect with the spirit, 3; and the spirit with the Divinity, 4. This is what the exact correspondence of every spiritual being with the eternal Creator proves to us.
3I wish to make known, moreover, the correspondence of the heart of man with every spiritual being. The body of man is the organ of the soul; it is by it that the minor makes his intention and his will of spiritual action perceptible to all his fellows, by the different movements and the different operations he makes his form perform. The minor soul is the organ of the intellect; the intellect is the organ of the major spirit, and the major spirit is the organ of the divine Creator. Such is the fair organic harmony of the principal divine spiritual beings, whether with the particular form of man or with the general and universal form; and this is what makes us know with certainty that all is truly emanated from the first being necessary to every being whatsoever, whether spiritual or temporal.
