1O Israel! shall thy soul be always stiff towards the Creator? shall it always harden itself after the benefits wherewith He has filled it? Scarcely art thou come forth from servitude and from the slavery of the demons, than thou makest every effort to live again under their law; thou seekest to create a God who shall conduct thee and govern thee according to his will and thy caprice: thou hast used for this effect a matter impure and prohibited by the Eternal! thou hast solicited the Creator to operate in favour of thy iniquitous misdeed; thou hast tempted Aaron, to whom had been remitted the care of thy spiritual conduct; all Israel has raised the stone against Aaron and has threatened him with death if he did not himself put into the crucible the metals thou hadst destined to thy iniquitous operation. But what was the success thou didst hope for from it, and what is that thou hast obtained? Thou didst count upon producing by this means a figure like that of man, to erect it thereafter into a God! didst thou not know that no form of body whatsoever can take place nor exist save by proceeding according to the laws of reproduction which the Eternal has given to nature? This is what the unexpected fruit of thy prevarication has taught thee. Thou didst count upon seeing born a form in the image of the Creator, in seeing it born in thy likeness. Thy pride has been humbled when thou hast received only an inanimate form of a brute, and without any substance of action.
2Such, Israel, is all thou canst ever expect from the demoniac intellect and from the prince of the demons; and yet it is with them that thou seekest ceaselessly to bind thyself, to live eternally under laws abominable and contrary to those of the Creator and of the divine spiritual humanity. This corporeal form of a calf, which has resulted from thy operation, teaches thee what is the animal thou shalt offer in future in sacrifice to the Creator for the expiation of thy sin; for it is very great before the Eternal, and the blood of that animal must be spread upon Israel, and then upon the earth, that Israel may be washed of its stain and that the earth may be purified of the defilement Israel has committed upon it. It is now needful that I instruct thee in the faculties and in the power of the great prince of the demons, under whom thou hast remained in slavery in Egypt. The prevarication of the demoniac chief has made him fall into so great a privation that he can no longer receive any divine intellect; but there remains to him and there shall always remain the faculty of thought; and the will that corresponds to that thought forms his general demoniac intellect. By his word of command, which must be regarded as his action, he insinuates this evil spirit among his adherent spirits, who then communicate it to the minors whom the prince of the demons seeks ceaselessly to seduce and to submit to his laws.
3These evil adherent spirits, though inferior, have the same faculty as the prince of the demons, because they are, like him, thinking beings and freed from all material form; they have consequently their particular intellect, which emanates immediately from themselves, as the general evil intellect emanates from the great prince of the demons, their chief. Thou seest therefore thereby that the evil spirit has in his power only two powers: his own pure determined one, and secondly that of the inferior spirits his adherents. Thou seest also that the demoniac prince has in his authority the general evil spiritual intellect. Likewise, the adherent spirits dispose of their particular evil intellect. Learn, Israel, that it is this particular instinct that surrounds every created being of body and every minor being as soon as he is emancipated from the circle of the Divinity; it is it that tempts, attacks and combats the spiritual minors, and most often makes them succumb according to its perverse desire; as thou mayest judge thyself by thy last event. Learn moreover that, independently of the snares which the perverse inferior spirits lay for the minors, those same minors are no less exposed to the ambushes which the principal chief of all the demoniac court ceaselessly lays for them, so that thou canst not be too much on guard against the infinite dangers wherewith thou art surrounded.
