1Abel then returned to find Adam and imparted to him all that had passed, which greatly afflicted this unhappy father and plunged him into the greatest consternation. Abel then tried to console Adam and put questions to him upon the subject of his sadness and his dejection; but Adam answered him nothing. It seemed that he foresaw what was to befall this well-beloved son, and that he dared not tell him. Abel reassured Adam upon all these disquiets and said to him in a firm tone: "My father, what is decreed by the Creator in your favour and that of your posterity must have its action either in good or in evil; for the general creation that you see is nothing else than a bond which the Eternal has reserved to cause the manifestation of his omnipotence to be operated, for his greater glory. It is therefore, my father, in your corporeal posterity that the Creator will place fitting subjects, to be the true instruments of which he will make use for the triumph of his justice, the advantage of the good and the shame of the wicked. It is useless for man to go against what is deliberated by the Creator for or against his spiritual creature." Adam appeared calm, and, addressing himself to the Creator, he said: "O thou eternal! may that which is conceived by thy thought and by thy will be accomplished by thy faithful servant, father of the multitude of the nations who shall dwell and operate within thy universal circle, amen!""
2Thereafter Adam and Abel went to visit Cain, who came out to meet them with his two sisters. When they had joined, these daughters embraced their father and Cain embraced his brother Abel; but, in that embrace, Cain dealt Abel three blows with an instrument of wood made in the form of a dagger. The first blow pierced his throat, the second pierced his heart, and the last pierced his entrails. This murder took place in the presence of Adam without his perceiving it. But scarcely was the murder committed than Adam felt a terrible commotion; the two sisters of Cain and of Abel felt the like; and all three, struck by this commotion, fell backwards, crying out: "Our conciliator, Lord, is ravished from us by the hand of the impious! We claim justice, and we remit our vengeance to thee alone.""
3See with what artifice the subjects of the demon disguise themselves in the eyes of the creature by words spiritual and praiseworthy in appearance. This summons, although very natural among the three persons above, and founded upon the sympathy of their sense of matter, proceeded further from another cause, as did the prostration that befell these three persons. It proceeded from the vision they had in effective nature of the minor and major spiritual of Abel, and which they could not sustain without falling into a swoon. Adam rose first and returned, in company with the major and minor of Abel, to find Eve again, to whom he made known all that the Creator had willed to require of him for his entire reconciliation, that these crimes had just been expiated by the victim Abel, his son, and that thus all was consummated. I leave you to think what must have been the sorrow of this unhappy father and what was that of his companion. Are these not those famous brambles that pierced the heart of Adam? Is this not that fatal bramble produced upon the earth, created by the prevarication of Adam? It is therefore Eve who produced, in Cain, the instrument of the scourge of the unhappy Adam, having conceived this son with Adam by an operation of confusion, according as the number two announces it to us, and as I shall here detail with sincerity.
