The source text as printed, transcribed diplomatically. Where the source language uses a non-Latin script that reaches us only through a Victorian romanisation, this layer is labelled transliteration, because that is what we hold.
1The firstborn of this posterity made, among his six brothers, the type of the interpreting spirit: he received from the Creator, to this effect, the gift of interpreting to his brothers the gifts proceeding from their operations; he was also the one who first began to operate the power and the virtue he held from the Creator. He never again separated from his father Noah, save when the Eternal withdrew him, after he had finished his prescribed time of temporal divine spiritual actions. This first sage fixed the interval of the times necessary for the operation he had to make; and, according to the order he had received of it, he fixed this interval at the quarter of the ordinary days which we now see circulating among us. He fixed it thus, although he was a thinking being in whom there was no darkness, in order to give his brothers a fixed rule for themselves and for their disciples to come of the intervals they were to set in the different operations of the divine worship. The second made his spiritual operation only immediately after the first had finished his. Although this second operation was in similitude of the first, nevertheless the operator could not bring to it the same intentions, nor employ therein the same words, because the gift he had received was different from that which had been granted
2to the first. This gift was that of prophecy for the manifestation of the divine justice. This second operator fixed the half of the time, joining to the first interval a like interval of six hours for the course of his operation. I must not leave you ignorant that the third of these sages had received the gift of universal, general and particular astronomy, and that the fourth had received the gift of the knowledge of the powerful Word which the Creator employed for all his temporal creation. And so this last operated in favour of human bodies for their conservation during the course of their duration; and it is thence that has issued the art of healing maladies radically, as I shall show hereafter when I speak of the different events that befall corporeal forms. I must tell you here further that the four first sages made the type of the prophets past and to come.
3It must be known that an interval cannot fix a continuous and perpetual time save when the beginning of the second interval has fixed its extent; and it is when the two intervals are thus reunited that they conduct themselves as the half of a time, because a time is composed of four intervals. It is thus the four firstborn of the second posterity of Noah who fixed the four intervals of a time, exercising their spiritual operation each during six hours. The two first operators form the half of the daily and temporal time, and the two second form the other half. The one belonged to the day, the other to the night; which forms in all the just and complete time of the bounds which the Creator has given to the daily course of his universal creation. Although the four first sages fixed a time for their spiritual operations, and although it is even thence that the present day of twenty-four hours has been restored to its first state of daily and nocturnal nature, one must take good care not to believe, as I have already said, that these sages were submitted to the times they had fixed, and that their spirit was subjected to the bounds and the intervals they had just established.
