1would depend immediately upon themselves, even as they depended upon him who had emanated them. This is what we call the principle of spiritual evil, it being certain that every evil will conceived by the spirit is always criminal before the Creator, even though the spirit should not carry it into effective action. It is in punishment of this bare criminal will that the spirits were cast down, by the sole power of the Creator, into places of subjection, of privation and of impure misery, contrary to their spiritual being, which was pure and simple by their emanation; which is now to be explained.
2These first spirits having conceived their criminal thought, the Creator made force of law upon his immutability by creating this physical universe, in appearance of material form, to be the fixed place where these perverse spirits were to act and to exercise in privation all their malice. There must not be comprehended within this material creation the man, or the minor, who is today at the centre of the terrestrial surface; because man was to make use of no form of this apparent matter, having been emanated and emancipated by the Creator only to hold dominion over all the beings emanated and emancipated before him. Man was emanated only after this universe had been formed by the divine Omnipotence to be the asylum of the first perverse spirits and the bound of their evil operations, which shall never prevail against the laws of order that the Creator has given to his universal creation. He had the same virtues and powers as the first spirits; and although he was emanated only after them, he became their superior and their elder by his state
3of glory and by the force of the command he received from the Creator. He knew perfectly the necessity of the universal creation; he knew moreover the usefulness and the holiness of his own spiritual emanation, as well as the glorious form wherewith he was clothed in order to act in all his wills upon the corporeal forms, active and passive. It was in this state that he was to manifest all his power for the greater glory of the Creator in the face of the universal creation, general and particular. We here distinguish the universe into three parts, to make it conceivable to our emulators with all its faculties of spiritual action: 1° the universe, which is a circumference wherein are contained the general and the particular; 2° the earth, or the general part, from which emanate all the nourishments necessary to give substance to the particular; 3° the particular, which is composed of all the inhabitants of the celestial and terrestrial bodies. Such is the division we shall make of the universal creation, so that our emulators may know and operate with distinction and with knowledge of cause in each of these three parts.
