1Pour vous convaincre encore mieux que la réconciliation d'Adam n'a été faite qu’au bout de quarante ans, vous n'avez qu'à considérer la stérilité où la terre fut plongée pendant quarante ans après le séjour des eaux sur sa surface; ce qui la rendit comme un cadavre; et, dépourvue de sa plus grande végétation, elle ne reprit sa première vigueur et ses premières propriétés de reproduction qu'après qu'elle fut rebénie par le Créateur. Ce n’est de même qu'au bout de quarante ans de souffrances et de peines temporelles qu'Adam et Ève furent remis dans une puissance spirituelle divine temporelle. Le fléau des eaux ne se fit sentir si longtemps à la terre que pour être un exemple immémorial au reste des mortels de ce temps, afin qu'ils transmissent à leur postérité, de génération en génération, le souvenir du crime du premier homme et de celui de sa postérité première sous Caïn, et de celui de sa postérité seconde sous Seth, celle de Noé étant la troisième parmi laquelle ce bienheureux Noé fut trouvé juste devant le Créateur.
2Voilà comment ce châtiment survint sur toute la terre et sépara la création universelle d'avec la cour spirituelle divine. Il répète encore le chaos dans lequel étaient renfermées les trois essences fondamentales de tous les corps qui devaient servir à la formation de cet univers. Ces essences étant dans une indifférence qui les rendait susceptibles de recevoir l'impression des agents extérieurs, pour opérer ensuite selon l'intention du Créateur. Ce terrible événement marquait deux choses très importantes, la première: la punition générale de toute créature corporelle et celle de tout être spirituel mineur; la seconde que toute création quelconque provenait directement de l'Éternel, et qu'il était impossible à tout autre être de créer un pareil univers avec toutes les merveilles qui y sont renfermées.
3Lorsque Noé fut sorti de l'arche, il parla ainsi au reste des créatures qui étaient avec lui: «Écoute, terre, et vous, hommes, entendez-moi et comprenezmoi de l'entendement de votre être spirituel, et non de celui de votre matière. Je vous dis à tous que le Créateur est le souverain maître de tout ce qui existe dans le cercle universel; que tout est provenu de lui, et que tout est soumis à sa justice. Sa bonté divine nous a tous pris pour témoins de la manifestation de sa gloire invincible, exercée contre toute la terre et tout le reste de ses habitants. Louons du fond de notre âme ce suprême père de miséricorde envers la créature qui ne met sa confiance qu'en lui. Que les débris de ce triste fléau, exposés à vos yeux, vous apprennent à ne point pécher contre l'esprit créateur de toutes choses, et à ne point abjurer sa toute-puissance éternelle, ainsi que vos prédécesseurs l’on fait. Ils ont regardé le corps général terrestre comme éternel, n'ayant point eu de principe et ne devant point avoir de fin. Ils l’ont regardé encore comme ayant donné seul le principe à toute chose, et ont admis que tout leur être en était provenu, ne connaissant rien eux-mêmes de supérieur à la forme corporelle, et ne se croyant pas des êtres spirituels divins.

1To convince you still better that the reconciliation of Adam was made only at the end of forty years, you have only to consider the sterility wherein the earth was plunged for forty years after the sojourn of the waters upon its surface; which rendered it like a cadaver; and, deprived of its greatest vegetation, it recovered its first vigour and its first properties of reproduction only after it had been blessed again by the Creator. It was likewise only at the end of forty years of temporal sufferings and pains that Adam and Eve were restored to a temporal divine spiritual power. The scourge of the waters made itself felt so long to the earth only to be an immemorial example to the rest of the mortals of that time, so that they might transmit to their posterity, from generation to generation, the remembrance of the crime of the first man, and of that of his first posterity under Cain, and of that of his second posterity under Seth — that of Noah being the third, among which this blessed Noah was found just before the Creator.
2Such is how this chastisement came upon all the earth and separated the universal creation from the divine spiritual court. It repeats further the chaos wherein were enclosed the three fundamental essences of all the bodies that were to serve for the formation of this universe. Those essences being in an indifference which rendered them susceptible of receiving the impression of the exterior agents, in order thereafter to operate according to the intention of the Creator. This terrible event marked two very important things: the first, the general punishment of every corporeal creature and that of every minor spiritual being; the second, that every creation whatsoever proceeded directly from the Eternal, and that it was impossible for any other being to create such a universe with all the marvels enclosed therein.
3When Noah had come forth from the ark, he spoke thus to the rest of the creatures that were with him: "Hear, O earth; and you, men, hear me and comprehend me with the understanding of your spiritual being, and not with that of your matter. I say to you all that the Creator is the sovereign master of all that exists in the universal circle; that all has proceeded from him, and that all is submitted to his justice. His divine goodness has taken us all for witnesses of the manifestation of his invincible glory, exercised against all the earth and all the rest of its inhabitants. Let us praise from the bottom of our soul this supreme father of mercy towards the creature that places its confidence in him alone. May the wreckage of this sad scourge, exposed to your eyes, teach you not to sin against the creating spirit of all things, and not to abjure his eternal omnipotence, as your predecessors have done. They regarded the general terrestrial body as eternal, as having had no beginning and as having to have no end. They regarded it further as having alone given the beginning to every thing, and admitted that all their being had proceeded from it, knowing nothing themselves superior to the corporeal form, and not believing themselves divine spiritual beings.
