1The name of Aaron signifies man raised in divine grace, or divine prophet; and the name of Ur signifies fire of the lord, or the spirit of the Divinity. Moses then said: "May the will of God be accomplished according as he has ordained it for the deliverance of his people and the molestation of the Egyptians!" He betook himself at once into the land of Egypt with his two assistants; and, presenting himself before Pharaoh, he commanded him from the Eternal to restore liberty to the Hebrews. Pharaoh refused. Moses repeated this order to him a second time and, after a third, he received always the same answer. Seeing this obstinacy, Moses withdrew to the centre of Egypt to make use there of all the power wherewith the Creator had clothed him. He struck Egypt and its inhabitants with seven horrible plagues which set the height of desolation in those
2places of darkness. One may hold to all that the Scripture relates upon this point. Moses then gave a general warning to the children of Israel to hold themselves ready for the hour of midnight, from the 14 to the 15 of the month of the moon Nisan or of March. It was the moment when the Hebrews were to be delivered from servitude and to make their way towards the land which the Creator had promised to their fathers. The people executed the orders it had received, and Moses, for his part, prepared himself to make at the same moment his great operation. He caused to be taken, to this effect, a white lamb of one year, without blemish exterior or interior. The lamb, symbol of the victim that was to be immolated thereafter for the salvation of the human race, represented also the purity of the body and of the soul of the children of Israel. This lamb, being slain by Aaron to serve as holocaust of expiation, Moses took its blood, wherewith he marked in the form of a receptacle the four angles of the place where he was to make his great operation to strike the four parts of Egypt; and then he had the rest of the blood spread upon the earth. Moses had likewise ordained to all the children of Israel to choose a lamb like his own. The heads of families were to slay this lamb and to mark, with its blood, in the form of a receptacle, the door of their houses. That was the mark of the alliance of the Creator with Israel, and of the entire extermination of the Egyptians.
3This receptacle gave the Israelites a double instruction: the first, that this animal blood, taken as a symbol of power, represented their spiritual soul; the second, that this same blood was the trunk and the seat whence that soul presides over and actuates the whole
