1Moses, in floating upon the waters, truly makes the type of the spirit of the Creator that floats upon the radical fluid for the disentangling of the chaos. You know that it is nothing else than the laws of order and of action that were given to all things contained in the chaotic mass. Noah, who had been witness of the manifestation of the divine justice and glory, had already made the type of the glory of the universal Creator; I shall therefore have you observe that all the types made by this patriarch were repeated by the spiritual observations of Moses. They both floated upon the
2waters. Noah reconciled the rest of the mortals with the Creator; Moses reconciled the posterity of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob with the Divinity. Noah regenerates the divine worship in the posterity of Jacob. Noah conducts for forty years the men he has reconciled with the Creator; Moses conducts the Jewish people during the same time. Noah offers a sacrifice to the Creator in thanksgiving; Moses likewise offered sacrifices with the reconciled people. I should never finish if I wished to detail for you all the types which Moses repeated, both those of Noah and those of the patriarchs past and to come. I shall content myself with exhorting you to make serious reflections upon the greatness of the type of Moses. You will learn to know that this Elect represents perfectly, by his operations, the triple divine essence in his universal, general and particular creation, as you may see. 1° The birth of Moses represents the very action of the Creator. 2° The reconciliation which Moses made represents the operation of the divine man, or of the son of the Creator. 3° The conduct of the people confided to the care of Moses represents the divine Spirit that conducts, governs and directs every temporal and spiritual being inferior to him. The Scripture has taught us how a daughter of the king of Egypt saved the young Moses from off the waters of the Nile, and had him raised secretly to steal him from the pursuit of Pharaoh and of his courtiers, who had resolved to make perish all the male children of the Hebrew people. This princess conceived a strong friendship for the young Moses, who was of a great beauty. She was struck by the reflective air that showed itself in him at so tender an age, and which promised all the
3knowledge and all the reasoning which the young Moses effectively showed from the age of two years. The mother of the child was the nurse whom the princess chose; and, to assure herself that all the orders she had given to take the greatest care of him were exactly observed, she required that the nurse should present the child to her every day. This already announced the alliance which the idolaters would make in future with the divine laws, which was effected by the remnants of the Egyptians who, after the destruction of Pharaoh and of his army, joined themselves to the law of Moses. The nurse punctually executed the orders she had received, and the child grew more and more in beauty. One day among others, the princess was so charmed to see him that, having taken him in her arms, she resolved to venture to carry him to Pharaoh her father. To this effect she passed into an audience hall where there were several tables. Upon one of these tables was a great cushion whereon the crown and the sceptre of the king were placed. Among the precious stones that adorned the crown of the king there was a carbuncle that cast a considerable fire. The princess brought the young Moses near and placed him standing upon the table where these jewels were, in order to see the effect they would have upon him, knowing all they did upon grown men. At the sight of the brilliance of all these ornaments, the young Moses uttered a great cry of joy and began to leap about like most children of his age. The princess pushed her curiosity to the end in acceding to the desire the child showed of taking all these jewels: she examined the apartment to see whether she was not observed and, perceiving no one, she leans Moses over the crown and
