1The Scripture gives Abraham further the name of father raised in a multitude of confusion. These three different explanations proceed from the three first posterities of Abraham, which are Ishmael, Isaac and Jacob. Ishmael, whom I represented to you previously as a type of divine mercy, makes equally here the type of the physical operation of Adam for the reproduction of his carnal posterity — an operation which Abraham repeats in concert with his concubine. Their son Ishmael, proceeded from the cupidity of their material senses, was excluded from the paternal house because he had been conceived without the participation of the divine will, but only by the concupiscence of the senses of matter. The bread and the water which Ishmael and Hagar, his mother, received from Abraham, and with which they went where their lot was to conduct them, represented the last spiritual and temporal nourishment they received from this patriarch; this type repeated further the last spiritual nourishment which Cain received, from the time he conceived of committing the murder of his brother Abel. Having made the type of the sister of Cain, his accomplice, and the more guilty, the want of material nourishment wherein Hagar was with her son, and which engaged them to implore the Creator, represents the sorrow and the consternation wherein Cain and his sister were when the murder of their brother Abel was known and when they saw themselves thereby excluded from all participation in the divine sciences and spiritual nourishments.
2The angel who appeared to Hagar and to Ishmael, who satisfied their hunger and their thirst and who indicated to them the place where the Eternal had fixed their dwelling, recalls to us the grace which the Eternal granted to Cain and to his sister, in having them marked upon the forehead by his angel with the invincible seal of the Divinity, which announced to both that they had obtained mercy from the Creator and that they would once more enjoy the divine spiritual nourishment that had been withdrawn from them in relation to their crime. The place of the residence of Hagar and of Ishmael was the same as that where Cain and his sister had been relegated. This is what makes us conceive that Abraham and Ishmael are types of Adam and of Cain in their material operations. Abraham was raised in a posterity of matter by his son Ishmael. Adam was so likewise, as we have often said in all that has preceded. Abraham, by his son Ishmael, is found to be father of twelve tribes, as the Angel had announced to Hagar. There were also twelve tribes in Adam, counting him with his three children and the eight Patriarchs who are found from Seth to Noah. The twelve tribes of Ishmael were the type of the advent of those of Israel and of those of Christ: they concentrated themselves within themselves and had no correspondence with those of Israel, because Ishmael, father of these twelve tribes, repeats the type of the prevarication and of the reconciliation in repeating the type of Cain.
3These same Ishmaelite tribes preserved themselves under the divine protection so long as they observed the worship which the Creator had caused to be traced for them by his angel; but thereafter, having made alliance with the posterity of Ham and of Canaan, they were forgotten by the Creator, and, by their prevarication, they rendered themselves like the posterity of Enoch when it had bound itself with the posterity of Cain, whom the Creator had excluded from the society of the children of God. See by this concatenation that all the epochs and the first elections repeat themselves among men, and make known to us that they shall repeat themselves until the end of the ages. The sequel of this Treatise will make it better comprehended still, when I show clearly that at the end all shall return as at the beginning. Let us pass to the second posterity of Abraham. Abraham, after having been reconciled in part with the Creator, had, by divine authority, a son of his wife Sarah, although her advanced age had put her out of a state to conceive. This child, conceived without the passion of the material senses, was called Isaac, which repeats very perfectly the birth of the second posterity of Adam in his son Abel. Isaac followed exactly the divine spiritual instructions which his father Abraham gave him upon the different forms of worship he was destined to fulfil, which repeats further the type of Abel under the spiritual conduct of Adam.
