1Wilt thou tell me, to excuse thy prevarication towards the Creator, that thy weakness is the cause of it, and that this weakness proceeds from thy corporeal form of matter which holds the minor in privation of spiritual power? I shall answer thee that this is very false, since
2all the minors who have been restored to their first divine spiritual powers and virtues and have found grace before the Eternal — such as Adam, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and several others — have prevaricated no more after their reconciliation, although nevertheless they were still in corporeal forms. As soon as these minors were sanctified and reconciled, they delivered their liberty to the power of Him from whom they had received it. Thus, this liberty has brought forth none but pure wills, and the will of these reconciled minors has adopted none but wholly spiritual thoughts which have made them operate acts of power surprising and incredible to the prevaricating minors. These minors thus reconciled were no longer susceptible of succumbing to the ambushes of the demon, nor of adopting his intellect of abomination, and this because these minors read into the deepest thought of the demoniac beings, interrupted them in all their criminal enterprises and deprived them thereby of all the glory which those perverse beings promised themselves in persecuting them. Believe not then, Israel, that weakness is given directly to man and that it is his corporeal form of matter that makes him succumb to temptation. This form is not charged with directing itself; it is but the organ of the minor; it does but operate the wills, good or evil, which the minor receives from the good or from the evil spirit. And so, when man succumbs, he must not cast his fall upon his corporeal form of matter, but must attribute it to his sole will. It is very sure however that there exists innate in the minor a faculty, an act
3that may be treated as weakness; but, as this weakness tends only to good, it cannot displease the Creator. It proceeds only from a true spiritual humanity which teaches us to do good for the evil which the demons cause to be operated against us by our fallen fellows. Such is the weakness innate in the minor. This is so true that, if it were permitted me to instruct thee in all the charity and in all the divine weaknesses which the Creator employs in favour of his spiritual creature, thou wouldst shudder with shame. But the time shall come when thou shalt be instructed in what I cannot tell thee now; and thou shalt thyself be judge of the things I am obliged to tell thee; thou shalt then clearly know that there are no other weaknesses innate in the minor than that of which I have just spoken to thee, and which would rather deserve the name of mercy. Fear then, upon pain of death, to regard the minor as a feeble being. Had he been emanated such from the bosom of the Creator, it was useless for the Creator to give him liberty. If he had not in him the strength to make use of it, not only would he be an impure and contradictory being, but the Creator himself would be so also, in that He would participate in two actions opposed one to the other, whereas there is in the Creator but a single action which subdivides itself to infinity for the good and the advantage of his creature.
