1general of the particular form it inhabits. This figure represented further the four celestial regions whence Moses caused to come forth, by the four divine powers, the four exterminating angels who were to molest the Egyptians, and at the same time to watch over the defence of the people of Israel at the going forth from Egypt. Moses had ordained the Israelites to slay and to flay the lamb they had chosen. They were then to cook it, to eat all the flesh from the head to the half of the body, and to have the rest consumed by fire. By the cooking of the lamb, Moses figured to the Israelites the purification of their corporeal form, to dispose themselves to the communication of the divine spiritual intellect; and, in ordaining that what remained of the lamb should be burned, he wished to represent to them the reintegration of the spirituous essences into the central axis whence they have proceeded. For, even as the elementary fire has the property of reducing to ashes all it embraces, so the central axis has the faculty of devouring and dissipating entirely all that is reintegrated into it, without there remaining any appearance nor any substance suitable and fit to be inhabited by a spirit. Moses ordained moreover to the Israelites that the families who should have no lambs in their houses should join themselves to those who had them. He announced thereby the alliance which the rest of the idolaters of Egypt would make in future with the divine law; which has effectively come to pass.
2To instruct you amply in all the events that preceded the deliverance of the Hebrew people from servitude, I shall relate to you the spiritual operations which Moses was obliged to oppose to those of the magi of Egypt and of the sages of Ishmael whom he met among the Egyptians. These magi and these sages professed secretly in Egypt, from generation to generation, the divine science; but Moses, having discovered them, spoke to them thus: "I say to you, magi of Egypt and sages of Ishmael, that I am here from the Eternal, to oppose my power to yours for the glory of my God, on whom all depends, and for the deliverance of his elect people. Why do you march against the will of the Creator, hardening the soul of Pharaoh and inducing him to reject the demand I make him in favour of Israel?" The sages and the magi answered him: "If the God thou servest is as powerful as thou sayest, why does he not operate himself and by his own will, without the succour of a being like thee? Go, thy God was never such as thou sayest and thy power is but imposture.""
3Moses, struck by this insult, casts to the ground his rod, or the mysterious wand he held in his right hand, and it was at once converted into a serpent. One of the sages likewise casts his rod, which was, like that of Moses, changed into a serpent. These two serpents remain facing one another during all the time that Moses interpreted to the magi of Egypt the type of this metamorphosis: "Magi of Egypt, and you, sages of Ishmael," he said to them, "I know this power and the deeds that may proceed from it; it is with regard to mine what mine is with regard to that of the living God of Israel. These serpents that thou seest crawling upon the earth explain to thee the abasement and the casting down of the proud power of the demons and of the men whom they have rendered like themselves. The serpent proceeded from my rod, and which seeks to devour that which is proceeded from thine, announces to thee that man shall not always crawl upon the earth, but that one day he shall be clothed with his first power, and that then he shall walk upright against those who have made him fall. I tell thee moreover that this change into hideous forms, which these rods have undergone, is the real explanation of the change of the glorious forms of the superior demoniac spirits and of the divine spiritual minors into a form of vile terrestrial matter that holds them in privation. Lord," he added, addressing himself to the creator, "arise and walk before me, that thy glory may be manifested before thy powerful elect!""
