1spiritual good, refused to betake herself to the king, because she knew she would not be safe there and that the king wished to have her put to death at the instigation of the tribe of Benjamin, which, having wrongly sworn the destruction of the Gibeonites, feared that this Pythoness might discover its blackness, and draw down upon that same tribe the scourges of justice. Saul's deputies having reported to him the answer of the Pythoness, he sent order to seize her and to bring her to him by force; but, as she was informed of the evil intentions of the king and of the tribe of Benjamin, she forestalled their effect by withdrawing to a house a league distant from the city of Gilboa. The deputies, not finding her, went to render account of her escape to Saul, who was keenly afflicted by it. But after some reflection, he had her sought with all vigilance by other persons than the first, promising her, upon the faith of a king, that he would do her no wrong either in her person or in her goods. One of these last deputies, being endowed with divine wisdom, was soon informed of the new dwelling of the Pythoness, to whom he imparted what Saul had done to her advantage. The Pythoness answered the deputy: "May the will of the Lord-king, thy master, be done according to that of the Eternal. Tell thy king to betake himself to my new asylum. There I shall satisfy his desires." The deputy rendered account to the king of this answer in the presence of the principal chiefs of the tribe of Benjamin. They comprehended thereby that the snares they had laid against the excellent virtue of the Pythoness were about to be without success, and that on the contrary they were about to become themselves victims of their calumnies and of their trickery. This is what
2Saul, having betaken himself to the Pythoness, she said to him: "Lord, what dost thou desire to learn from the Eternal, and what wouldst thou have me teach thee?" The king answered her: "I am assured that thou art a diviner; tell me then whether I shall win the battle I must give the Philistines and the Gibeonites, who have allied themselves together against Israel. Tell me whether these two nations shall be delivered to my justice." — "Lord," said the Pythoness, "permit thy servant to speak to thee a moment before answering thy request; I say in truth that it is by the people that thou art elected king of Israel and not by the living God. Then it is not astonishing that thou art ceaselessly in doubt and in fear of the success thy temporal actions and operations must have. The ancient conductors of Israel had no such doubts nor such uncertainties; they employed not the help of ordinary men of the earth nor their counsels, because, being elected by the living God and protector of Israel, they had no other counsel than that of the Eternal, and by this means they were sure of the success their temporal actions and operations must have, as much in their favour as in that of Israel. I tell thee moreover, Lord-king, that thy counsel is false and purely material, because it proceeds from wicked and impure men; they have seduced thee into engaging to act against the spiritual good of the just of Israel and of the other nations. The Pythoness who speaks to thee has known all the demoniac ambushes that have been laid against
3her by the principal chiefs of the tribe of Benjamin, become since thy reign the intellects of the demon. They had persuaded thee to put me to death, thou hast even pronounced my sentence of death; but learn, Lord-king, that the God of Abraham protects the just before him and casts down ignominiously into the deep abysses the impious and the persecutors of the just. Conceive the words I say to thee according to the spirit that quickens me and from him who animates it. The chiefs of the tribe of Benjamin shall be shamefully overthrown; that tribe shall be subdivided; it shall remain wandering, vagabond and confounded among those of Israel for an immemorial time. This event shall befall it after thy reign; its standards, its signs of colours and all the other marks that distinguish it from the other tribes of Israel shall be taken from it; they shall be defiled by the Egyptian people who flee Israel since the fatal epoch that befell Pharaoh and all his army. For, Lord-king, the events that formerly befell that strange people and its kings were but the faithful type of that which must befall the first temporal king of Israel. The ignominious destruction of Pharaoh and of the greater part of his people, as also the servitude and the dispersion of the small number that remains of it, announces to thee the lot that threatens thee, Lord-king, thy posterity and thy cherished tribe, if thou makest not peace with the God of Israel. This cherished tribe of Benjamin shall be sacrificed in part; its unfortunate remnants shall be wandering and confounded among the children of Israel without having either conductor or particular chief, as are the remnants of the Egyptians newly converted to the living God of Abraham by the law of Israel. Thy crime, Lord-king, is still greater before God and before men, because thou hast unjustly put to death Gibeonites who were reconciled with the Lord God of Israel and blessed by Joshua in the name of the Eternal under their oath. Part of that people was disposed by the sages of Israel to hold impression of this divine worship and was to teach it and to have it practised by the nation, so that, by thy conduct towards that people, thou hast contravened the decrees of the Eternal, who can leave no crime unpunished. Learn then from him who speaks to thee by my mouth that, if thou implorest not the mercy of the Eternal, and if thou persistest in wishing to finish destroying the remainder of the unhappy Gibeonites allied with the Philistines, thy punishment shall strike the eyes of all the nations of our region. All the children of Israel shall groan over thy lot, and their sorrow shall be incredible, because they shall have served as instrument to the unjust scourge wherewith thou shalt have overwhelmed the new converts. I must teach thee moreover that, in the whole world, there is neither diviner nor divineress; none can read into the past save by the present, and thus, having a perfect knowledge of the one and of the other, it is not difficult for the man-God to read more or less into the future. Know moreover, Lord-king, that when some labour whatsoever is needed to attain to reading into all the operations, actions, contractions, vegetations, revolutions and other temporal spiritual things that are executed in this universe by the spirit or by man, he who can attain to this cannot for that be called diviner or divineress, since he can obtain this knowledge only after painful
