1first man and the whole earth? The Creator let the impure work of the minor subsist so that he might be molested from generation to generation, for an immemorial time, having always before his eyes the horror of his crime. The Creator has not permitted the crime of the first man to be effaced from beneath the heavens, so that his posterity could not plead ignorance of his prevarication, and that it might learn thereby that the pains and miseries it endures and shall endure until the end of the ages come not from the Creator, but from our first father, creator of impure and passive matter. (I make use of this word impure matter here only because Adam operated this form against the will of the Creator.)
2If it be further asked how the change of Adam's glorious form into a form of matter was effected, and whether the Creator himself gave Adam the form of matter he took immediately after his prevarication, I shall answer that scarcely had he accomplished his criminal will than the Creator, by his omnipotence, at once transmuted the glorious form of the first man into a form of passive matter like that which had proceeded from his criminal operation. The Creator transmuted this glorious form by casting man down into the abysses of the earth whence he had drawn forth the fruit of his prevarication. Man came thereafter to dwell upon the earth like the rest of the animals, whereas before his crime he reigned over that same earth as Man-God, and without being confounded either with it or with its inhabitants. It was after this terrible event that Adam recognised yet more strongly the greatness of his crime. He went at once to lament his fault and asked pardon for his offence of the Creator. He withdrew into his retreat, and there, in groanings and in tears, he invoked the divine Creator thus:
3"Father of charity, of mercy; Father quickening and of eternal life; Father God of the Gods, of the heavens and of the earth; God strong and most strong; God of justice, of punishment and of reward; Eternal Almighty; God avenging and remunerating; God of peace and of clemency, of charitable compassion; God of the spirits good and evil; strong God of the sabbath; God of reconciliation of every created being; God eternal and almighty, of the celestial and terrestrial regions; God invincible, existing necessarily without beginning or end; God of peace and of satisfaction; God of all domination and power, of every created being; God who punishes and who rewards when it pleases him; God fourfold strong of the revolutions and of the celestial and terrestrial armies of this universe; God magnificent of all contemplation, of created beings and of unalterable rewards; God father of mercy without bounds in favour of his feeble creature: hearken to him who groans before thee for the abomination of his crime. He is but the second cause of his prevarication. Reconcile thy man in thee and subject him to thee for ever. Bless also the work made by the hand of thy first man, that it may not succumb, as I have done, to the solicitations of those who are the cause of my just punishment and of that of the work of my own will. Amen!" I shall observe, touching this invocation which Adam made to the Creator to obtain from him his reconciliation, that it is positively Adam who first gave
