1they had to hold in order to attain that felicity whereof they have lost even the idea and the remembrance. See further whether this separation would not offer the true picture of natural temporal death by the separation of the soul from the body. The twelve tribes, by their intimate bond, formed but a single body; but when that unity was divided into two distinct parts, the one, being in privation of the other, fell into spiritual nothingness and ignorance. Likewise, when the soul is united to the body, it forms temporally a perfect unity with it; but when it separates itself from its body, it then forms two distinct divisions, whereof the one, in repetition of the major septenary number, remains, if it is just, under the divine protection and under the wings of the glory of the Eternal; and the other, in repetition of the quinary number of the wandering tribes, remains upon the earth, in privation of all spiritual action until its perfect reintegration.
2It is by this observation that you may conceive the event and the revolution that shall come upon the entire universe when he who vivifies it shall separate himself from it. For, after the image of the particular bodies, this matter shall remain wandering and in inaction until it is entirely dissipated. Such is the law that shall give an end to all temporal things. It is now needful to convince you that the first matter was conceived by the good spirit only to contain and to subject the evil spirit in a state of privation, and that truly this first matter, conceived and brought forth by the spirit and not emanated from it, had been engendered only to be at the sole disposal of the demons. To this effect, recall the apparition which the chief of the demons made in the presence of Christ, man-God of the earth. This perverse being would not have appeared to him under a human form and would not have attacked him, had the man-God not been clothed with a body of matter, and had he made use of the glorious form that is innate in him; for then the demoniac spiritual contraction could not have taken place, since pure spirit has the privilege of binding and of arresting every operation of the impure spirits.
3You will ask me whether the chief of the demons, in appearing to the divine man, had the project of seducing and corrupting simply his body of matter or his spirit. I shall answer you that his object was to seduce both the one and the other. First, he wished, by his demoniac intelligence, to corrupt the corporeal form of matter of this divine being and to render it thereby susceptible of retaining impression of all the false actions he should purpose to have communicated to it through the mediation of the operations he had given to the spirit attached to that corporeal form. In the second place, he desired still more ardently to seduce the spiritual being that dwelt in that body, conceiving nothing more glorious than that conquest, because at the same time as he opposed himself to the orders and to the will of the Creator, he knew that the considerable works and operations which the divine man would have done to the glory of that tempter would have drawn an infinity of minor beings, or of souls, under the power of the demoniac justice. But the spirit and the body of this regenerating being having succumbed neither the one nor the other to the ruses of the
