1to his posterity an exact knowledge of the different virtues, powers and properties innate in the Creator, so that this same posterity might learn thereby that it was created only to combat for the greater glory of God, and that it might render him the worship for which it has been perpetuated in its creation. This worship, which the Creator today requires of his temporal creature, is not the same as that which he would have required of his first minor, had he remained in his state of glory. The worship which man would have had to fulfil in his state of glory, being established to one end only, would have been wholly spiritual; whereas that which the Creator today requires of his temporal creature is to two ends: the one temporal and the other spiritual. This is what the prevarication of our first father has produced.
2After all that has been said upon the kind of Adam's prevarication, this truth cannot for an instant escape the physical, animal, spiritual, passive and eternal sight of man, without running full against the powerful sentiments and all the immense and infinite virtues that are adherent and innate in him. It has been seen that his crime took its principle in the solicitations which the perverse spirits made to the first man, God emanated, whom we name Adam, or first temporal father, or man ruddy or royal, which signifies Man-God most strong in wisdom, virtue and power — three things most holy and innate with certainty in man, and which are in him the thought, the image and the likeness of the Creator. It has been seen that the thought of the crime came not from him, but only from his direct will in his quality of a free man. Indeed, as I have said elsewhere, thought comes to man from a being distinct from himself; if the thought be holy, it proceeds from a divine spirit; if it be evil, it proceeds from an evil demon. Thus all the wills of man are put into operation and into action only conformably to the conception of his thought.
3This is not confined to this world alone, nor to men in general, but I comprehend therein all the other worlds also and all the spiritual beings that inhabit them; whether those of whom the Eternal makes use to communicate himself to his minor creature, and for the manifestation of his glory throughout the whole creation of this universe; or any others whatsoever unknown to us. The demons themselves, despite the condemnation they received from the Creator from the instant of their prevarication, have not changed laws in this regard; they enjoy fully and entirely their actions according to their thinking will, but they can hope for no communication of divine thought save that of which they should render themselves susceptible by changing their evil will. It is therefore in this demoniac court, in matter of law and of order, of horror and of abomination, as it is, without comparison, in the divine spiritual court. The principal chief of the demons, who has sworn to attack constantly and obstinately the law of the Creator, is the tree of life of evil for an eternity; he communicates his evil thought to the angels subjected to him, and these, conformably to their evil will, put that thought into action and into operation for the persecution of the minor. The whole task of this chief of abomination is to submit the minors to his obscure laws and to make them appear to them as clean and as clear as those which the Creator has placed in his creature.
