Ils conçurent, par leur propre volonté, une intention et un acte de pensée contraires aux lois d'action et d'opération qui leur avaient été fixées par le Créateur lors de leur émanation; mais loin de pouvoir opérer cet acte avec succès, ils furent trompés, et très surpris lorsqu'ils virent avec certitude l'impossibilité qu'il y avait pour eux et pour tout esprit d'enlever à la Divinité la quatriple essence et le fameux dénaire qui étaient innés en elle. Ils ne reconnurent parfaitement cette impossibilité que lorsqu'ils voulurent s'arroger chacun en particulier le produit de la subdivision de ce fameux quaternaire d'émanation et de création spirituelle divine et spirituelle temporelle; car leur intention était de ne faire de tout ce produit qu'une seule unité quaternaire ou qu'une seule unité dénaire. Loin de cela, ils ne trouvèrent plus ni l'unité quaternaire, ni l'unité dénaire pure et simple, mais seulement deux nombres quinaires au lieu et place du dénaire, divin qu'ils voulaient mettre en leur possession et en leur pouvoir. C'est par là qu'ils furent convaincus de leur orgueil atroce et insensé et de l'impossibilité pour un être quelconque de subdiviser la quatriple essence divine, non plus que son unité dénaire, ce droit ne pouvant appartenir qu'à l'Éternel, qui est seul et n'aura jamais d'égal; et c'est pour avoir tenté cette opération opposée aux lois immuables de l'Éternel Créateur, que les démons se trouvent n'avoir d'autre puissance que cette puissance quinaire de confusion, et qu'ils sont précipités dans les abîmes de la privation divine pour une éternité. 1Join the quinary number to the quaternary, and thou shalt have the number of the subdivision of the spirituous essences of matter and of that of the divine spiritual essences, and this by the conjunction of the quinary number, imperfect and corruptible, with the quaternary number, perfect and incorruptible. It is by this conjunction that man degrades his divine spiritual power in rendering it spiritual demoniac, and it is thereby that the crime of Adam was operated — a crime that occasioned an inconceivable revolution among all spiritual beings. Judge then, Israel, by what thou hast just seen, how great the power of the minor was, since he was possessor of the quaternary number, from which all temporal things and all spiritual action have proceeded. Thou knowest that, in his state of glory, this first minor had in him no spirituous action nor operation, and still less material ones, but on the contrary all sorts of spiritual actions and operations of glorious forms;
2thou knowest moreover that these glorious forms were not subject to time, any more than Adam himself, although Adam and all his operations were employed in favour of the temporal. Never forget then all I have just taught thee of the great power of the first man and of his quaternary number. I shall trace before thee the characters of the different things that proceed from this respectable number; thou canst give faith to it the more readily in that it is to thyself that this number is given, and that it is thereby that thou art superior to the brutes and to all creatures; remember moreover, Israel, that no minor being can be learned without a perfect knowledge of this great denary number of the Eternal and of all its content of emancipation and of creation: 1+2=3 1+2+3=6 1+2+3+4=10 It must be observed, Israel, that unity joins itself to the ternary only to form with the quaternary the number of the double power. 10+2+3+4+5+6=30 30+7+8+9+1=55=5+5=10 Thou seest, by the addition of all these particular numbers proceeded from the quaternary, the number 55, which announces to thee the division of the denary into two quinary and demoniac numbers. They conceived, by their own will, an intention and an act of thought contrary to the laws of action and of operation that had been fixed for them by the Creator at their emanation; but far from being able to operate this act with success, they were deceived, and much surprised when they saw with certainty the impossibility there was for them and for every spirit of taking from the Divinity the fourfold essence and the famous denary that were innate in it. They recognised this impossibility perfectly only when they wished each in particular to arrogate to himself the product of the subdivision of that famous quaternary of emanation and of creation, divine spiritual and spiritual temporal; for their intention was to make of all that product but a single quaternary unity, or but a single denary unity. Far from that, they found no longer either the quaternary unity or the pure and simple denary unity, but only two quinary numbers in the place and stead of the divine denary which they wished to put into their possession and into their power. It is thereby that they were convicted of their atrocious and senseless pride and of the impossibility for any being whatsoever to subdivide the fourfold divine essence, any more than its denary unity — this right being able to belong only to the Eternal, who is alone and shall never have an equal; and it is for having attempted this operation, opposed to the immutable laws of the Eternal Creator, that the demons find themselves having no other power than that quinary power of confusion, and that they are cast down into the abysses of divine privation for an eternity.
