1This division of three persons on one side and three on the other offers us a figure too striking for us not to observe it; it is the true type of the separation of good and evil; it represents to us further the three spiritual essences that compose the different corporeal forms of apparent matter, both those of the reasonable being and of the unreasonable. Join these two ternary numbers and you will see by their senary product the number of divine creation, or the six thoughts of the Creator for the universal, general and particular creation. See further whether you will not find what the Scripture teaches us, that three are above as three are below. See moreover which of the two ternary numbers figures evil. In fine, reflect upon this subject, and seek for yourself satisfying corrections and consequences. Cain, having withdrawn to the place Adam had destined for him, imparted to his two sisters the supposed outrage his father had done him in taking away his right of primogeniture, to render it reversible upon his younger brother Abel, and in subjecting him to the subordination and to the will of that same last-born brother Abel. Cain's two sisters engaged him to use all his power and his force against that of his brother and of his father, and even against the Creator who had permitted such a
2misdeed at the solicitation of a younger brother who had surprised their father's good faith and corrupted his thought by the ceremony of a false and unjust worship. In consequence, Cain conceived of operating a worship to the false gods and to the prince of the demons, that they might give him a power superior to that which the Creator had given to his brother Abel, and this to avenge himself for the supposed wrong he had received from his father through the mediation of his brother. He caused his two sisters to assist at his operation with him, as Abel and he had assisted at their father's operation; he consecrated his younger sister to the same functions as those Abel had fulfilled, and he followed with precision the whole first ceremonial he had seen performed. And when it was his turn to make his prostration, he set his other sister in the place he occupied at the altar or at the circles and, having placed himself in prostration, he offered in victim the form and the life of Abel (the form is the body, and the life is of the soul) to the prince of the demons.
3After this ceremony, Abel came to present himself to Cain, who made him many reproaches. Abel received them with sorrow and humility, and answered Cain thereafter: "It is neither with me nor with our temporal father that you should be angry; it is against yourself and against him who directs you at this moment that you should combat, for I tell you that you have just operated a false and impious worship before the Eternal. The force of your crime surpasses that of the crime of Adam: you have offered to your God of darkness a holocaust which is neither at your disposal nor at his; you have wrongly sought to shed the blood of the just for the justification of the guilty.""
