1It is impossible to admit a time for the spirit. Thus the intervals which the sages marked for their spiritual operations cannot be reckoned in relation to their nature as thinking beings, and the temporal day could not be a bound to their spirit, as it is one for corporeal nature. On the contrary, in thus tracing their spiritual intervals, they gave to understand that it was the spirit itself that had traced the temporal intervals. The nations among whom these sages spread themselves did not know how to distinguish this spiritual division of time from the ordinary division which is made daily according to created nature; and this is what has thrown them into gross errors of calculation and has made them take one of these spiritual intervals for one of the temporal days known to us. But before entering into this detail, I have to instruct you in the different gifts which the three last-born of the second posterity of Noah received. The fifth of this posterity received the gift of planting, of terrestrial cultivation. The sixth, that of the knowledge of the literal and hieroglyphic character, celestial, terrestrial spiritual, superior, major inferior and minor
2divine. This one knew further perfectly all the hieroglyphic characters of every demoniac spiritual being. The seventh received the gift of constructing spiritual edifices for the glory of the worship of the Creator, as had received it Adam, Seth, Enoch and Noah, who raised altars to the Lord.
3Moses has made known to us that he had the same gift for the construction of the mysterious ark, of the altar and of the tabernacle, as also for the minerals, the woods and all the other materials that were turned and worked by the effect of the spiritual operations of Moses and of Bezaleel. Moses traced the plan of the edifices and Bezaleel executed them. The three last sages, children of Noah of whom we have just spoken, held in their spiritual operation the same conduct the four first had held; but as their gifts were different, their intentions and their words could not be the same. The four first, who fixed the day by four intervals of operations, took no wives, being entirely consecrated to the worship of the Creator. They made a real type of those whom the Creator was to elect for the manifestation of his glory and of his justice. They figured further the just of the past and of the future, such as Enoch, whom the Scripture so greatly reveres, Melchizedek, Elijah and Christ — of whom two were carried away from the centre of the earth by the spiritual fire, and the two others were so in their own bodies of divine spiritual glory, as Christ proves very clearly by his resurrection as divine man. We have seen previously that Noah had emancipated from his care the three children who composed
