1To make thee better comprehend what I have said to thee above of the change that came upon the virtues and the powers of the spirits emancipated from the divine immensity, I shall tell thee that the Creator emancipates from His divine septenary circle a sufficient number of spirits, whom He subjects to operate in the supercelestial spiritual temporal actions. The laws of power relative to these operations were distributed in this order to the emancipated septenary spirits; another part, the faculty of the septenary power; another finally, that of the inferior ternary power. To these three classes of spirits was joined the minor who, by his power and his virtue, was infinitely superior to them, because, as I have already taught thee, this minor was a pure being whom no spiritual scandal had defiled. And so he was the only one of that immensity who had the quaternary power, and his action was very different from those of the three other classes of the supercelestial. The Creator placed not in that supercelestial immensity a particular class of octonary spirits, as it was formerly in the divine immensity; that class itself is no longer found in the divine immensity, and this because, following the prevarication of the first spirits, the Creator, making force of law upon all his spiritual creature, emancipated his action of double power to go and operate his justice and his glory in the three different immensities without distinction. It is thence that it is taught thee that the doubly strong spirit is with thee when thou deservest it, and that it withdraws from thee when
2thou renderest thyself unworthy of its doubly powerful action. Thou hast seen this double power operate in Egypt in thy favour and for thy glory; it divided its action into two parts: the one to exterminate thy enemies, and the other to watch over thy spiritual and corporeal conservation. That is what the two columns figured to thee which always marched with thee and which followed thee in all thy triumphs. And this is by what means that doubly strong spirit is no longer in fixed dwelling in the divine immensity.
3Thou art not ignorant, Israel, that the supercelestial immensity is the likeness of the divine immensity, and that the same faculties of spiritual power are found again in both immensities. But there is this distinction to be made, that the divine spiritual agents operate in the infinite immensity of the Creator, whereas the supercelestial agents operate only in a bounded immensity. And so this supercelestial immensity is passive, because it is subject to time; it can no more have bounds than the thought and the power of the Creator have; and, from what I have said of that respectable immensity, thou must know that it consists only in the multitude of spirits which the Creator emanates from His bosom. It is by the continuity of this spiritual emanation that this divine immensity is infinite. Each spirit, at the moment when it emanates from the Creator, finds a place and a space suitable to its being to put into action and into operation the power it has received from the Eternal. Indeed, the Creator cannot emanate from his bosom a spirit without creating for it a power; and that power could not put itself into action with distinction if each spirit emanated from the Creator had not its particular space — which makes thee feel that, like the emanation, the divine immensity must also increase continually. Were this not so, the power of all these inhabitants of the divine immensity would operate in confusion, as the inhabitants of the material world operate theirs. What puts confusion among the inhabitants of the material worlds is their bounded space, which can contain only a fixed number of them; but the multitude of the inhabitants of the divine immensity grows and shall grow ceaselessly and to infinity without ever finding bounds. No time is needed for the emanation of these spirits as was needed for that of the temporal creation, because the spirits, receiving with their emanation all that suits them for acting according to their laws, have no need to use the power of the inferior spirits, as the minors inhabiting the temporal worlds are obliged to do.
