Cff. If. f 209 )

MUih.^ 7 à Marc.^ I?.
pearl, for thou art tenebrous, and she is fair and luminous. ( Adam has received in the Christ the pearl, for she plunged herself into the worm of the soul, and begot it anew for the light: and here the combat is like; for the virgin [ who here is the Sophia] would not give to the worm the pearl, understand the pure divinity; but he was to live in her court, and she would enlighten him and crown him. It is upon this that Adam was proved to know whether that could be: but, as that could not take place, the virgin Sophia gave the pearl to Christ, son of the terrestrial virgin, or to the prince in God.)
43. Then 5 the spirit of nature, or the young man said: My fair and chaste pearl, let me then enjoy thy support; wilt thou not unite thyself with me, lest I fill myself with thee? Enclose only thy pearl in my heart, so that I may have thee in my possession? Art thou not my golden crown? How I would taste of thy fruit!
44. Then the chaste spirit of God, or the virgin Sophia, said in Adam: My dear lover and companion, I see well thy desire; thou wouldst indeed unite thyself with me, but I am a virgin, and thou a man: thou wouldst soil my pearl and break my crown. Besides, thou wouldst mingle my sweetness with thy sourness, and thou wouldst obscure my clear light; that is why I will not. I will indeed lend thee my pearl, and clothe thee with my adornments; but
I abandon them not to thee in property.
Cff. If. f 209 )
45. And the companion, or the spirit of the world in Adam, said: I leave thee not. If thou wilt not that I unite myself with thee, I will take my most inward and strongest power, and I will use it with thee according to my will, and according to my most interior force. I will envelop thee with the power of the sun, of the stars, and of the elements 5 then no one will know thee, thou wilt be mine eternally; and although I be inconstant, as thou sayest, and that my virtue be not as thine, I will nevertheless keep thee in my treasure, and thou must be my property. Thus, the spirit in Adam would rule over the earth in a power of its own; for the spirit of the great world would act thus; even as Lucifer would rule over the virgin SOPHIA with his worm. If he had preserved the virgin SOPHIA, in love, and had he dwelt in her court, he would have remained an angel.
46. Then the virgin Sophia said: Why wilt thou use violence? am I not thy ornament and thy crown? I am clear, and thou art tenebrous. See: if thou veilest me, then thou hast no more any brightness, and thou art a tenebrous worm. How could I dwell with thee? Leave me only, I give myself not to thee in property; I will indeed decorate thee with my ornaments, and thou must live in my joy 5 thou must enjoy my fruits, and taste of my sweetness; but thou canst not inqualify with me. For my essence is the divine power in which is begotten my fair pearl, and my clear light; my fountain is eternal. If thou
L i4
obscurest my light, and that thou soil my garment, thou hast no more any beauty, and thou canst not sustain thyself, but thy worm will break; then I shall have lost my companion, whom I had chosen for spouse. I would have joy with him; but henceforth my pearl and my beauty will have no more contentment Isài^^S ; Mckit- , *i. (Whereof Isaiah speaks, as well as the Christ, in saying that he would indeed eat also of the noble grapes of the vine. MUih.^ 7 à Marc.^ I?. > If nevertheless I have associated myself with thee in the spirit of my joy, and that thou wilt not enjoy my beauty 5 remain none the less in my ornaments and in my virtue; dwell with me in my joy, and I will adorn thee eternally.
47, And the young man said: Thy ornament is already mine 5 I use thee at my will. I shall be destroyed in effect, as thou sayest 5 nevertheless my worm is eternal, it is by it that I shall rule; but I will dwell in thee, and cover thee with my garment.
46. Then the virgin Sophia turned toward the heart of God, and said: My heart and my love, thou art the power; by thee I am clear; I am begotten eternally of thy root; deliver me from the worm of the darkness, which tempts and infects my spouse: let me not be obscured by the darkness. I am really thy ornament; that is why come, so that thou mayest have joy in me. Why should I remai6n in the darkness with my spouse? And the divine answer was: The seed of the woman shall
crush the head of the serpent, of the worm; and he shall sting him in the heel.
