3. It is why we must reflect upon the great combat which is in us. When we are regenerated as to what is eternal in us, then what is eternal in us, combats against what is perishable, against the wickedness and the falsehood of what is perishable.

.4. Finally, each reign accomplishes its will: the interior goes straight before it, and consents not to the wickedness of the exterior; but it runs to its term; and the external reign or the exterior man, goes also before it by its desires; it accomplishes its work according to the influences of its constellation. . . 1

5. However, if it happens that the exterior does not what its desire wills, that comes not from its wisdom; but the astral heaven has changed that by another conjunction.

6. On the contrary, if it is pushed to leave there what is false, that is not the impulsion of the astral heaven;

but the new regenerated man, who is in combat with the terrestrial man, triumphs often; .1 it cannot however swallow up the terrestrial: in effect the terrestrial bears itself still on high, as we recognise it by our anger. Now, if my new man triumphs, he wills then neither anger, nor bad desires; but if the instigator of this world attacks him with address, then the fire of the anger rises in the old man, and often his desire enkindles him to the point of doing what at first he had himself rejected and condemned.

7 However, we cannot say that the spirit of this world alone, approves and does what is false and choleric; for often the whole man concurs in it with all his thoughts and all his wills. It is here that we recognise our great misery; for the poor soul who is still in the bond of the anger, is often stimulated to the point that she burns as a fire, and that she abandons herself. In effect, she is in the alliance of 1 eternity in the father; she reaches, in her most interior root, the anger of God; it is even there the generation and the origin of her life, and often she sees torn away and broken the noble grain of mustard-seed, which is this new habit of the soul, wherewith she had been clothed in her penitence. It is why no one must be in security; even though one had obtained once the crown of pearls, one may lose it anew; for if the soul consents to the sin, then she passes from the Christ into the falsehood and into the anger of God. 8 Thus we know that the Christ, by his en-
